Is Nick Kyrgios the hero or villain in his ongoing saga with Stan Wawrinka?

Tennis courts are no strangers to rivalries, and the drama doesn’t always end with the final point. Some feuds live on, fueling fan debates and lingering in players’ minds. One such unforgettable showdown? The fiery clash between Nick Kyrgios and Stan Wawrinka back in 2015. Their on-court altercation shocked the tennis world and cemented its place in sports lore. Now, Kyrgios, never one to hold back, has sparked fresh interest in the feud with his latest, unapologetic comments.

The Australian tennis sensation engaged in an interaction with The Louis Theroux Podcast and deliberated on a wide range of topics including his career and his past feud with Wawrinka. He highlighted the factors that led to the controversy and shared his unapologetic take on the entire issue, discussing how such things are common occurrences on the sports field.

Speaking in the interview, Kyrgios opened up on the feud and termed it as “Just good old-fashioned trashed talk.” Recalling the incident, he said, “It’s very good and very necessary in sport.” When quizzed if it was just a normal incident of sledging or if any hard feelings were involved, he said, “Yeah, exactly. Well, it wasn’t real. There is a whole story as to why it came out but I’m not gonna blabber on about it. It was just going back and forth back and forth back and forth.” The Aussie also revealed the situations that provoked the entire episode.

Continuing further in the interview, Kyrgios revealed that while Wawrinka did not say anything mean to him, “he was trying to hit me in the head with the tennis ball and I was like ‘What’s this guy problem’.” For those unaware, the roots of the controversy lie in the second round of the 2015 Rogers Cup that was held in Montreal.

Playing against Stan Wawrinka, the Aussie witnessed a thrilling encounter. After Wawrinka took the first set following a tight tiebreaker, both players began to walk back to their respective chairs. It was at this moment when Kyrgios told Wawrinka, “(Thanasi) Kokkinakis b**ged your girlfriend, sorry to tell you that mate”. While the Swiss player did not respond immediately, he expressed his displeasure over the incident later.

Speaking to the reporters in French, Wawrinka said, “I just hope the ATP takes big measures against him. He’s young but that’s no excuse … every match, he behaves very badly. The problem is he doesn’t just behave badly towards himself, he behaves badly towards the people around, the other players, the ball kids, the umpires. I really hope the ATP will take major action against him this time.”

Later, Kyrgios was also slapped with a fine of $10,000 for his remarks. But despite the animosity that the two players witnessed, Nick Kyrgios recently came out to express his anger at the officials for a decision that impacted Wawrinka’s fate in the recently concluded Shanghai Masters

Stan Wawrinka took on Flavio Cobolli at the Shanghai Masters this year. But what was supposed to be a thrilling encounter turned out to be a controversial one due to a judgment by the chair umpire. With both players winning one set each, the match was forced into a tie-breaker set, and what followed was rather expected.

With Wawrinka serving at 0-1 in the third set, he won the first point of the game after Cobolli missed a backhand return. Chair umpire Carlos Bernardes correctly called the score as 15-0 before picking up his walkie-talkie to request some electrolytes for the Italian player. But things turned out to be surprising when play resumed.

Cobolli won the next point against Wawrinka with a soft drop shot. Bernardes called the score again but said it was 0-30 instead of the correct 15-15. Interestingly, this was the only break of serve in the match. Eventually, It was Wawrinka who became a victim of the judgment. But Kyrgios decided to take the matter into his own hands. Taking to X, he bashed the umpire and wrote, “BERNARDES SHOILD OF BEEN FIRED YEARS AGO. HOW DOES THIS HAPPEN. Potato.”
