The world of sports has its fair share of controversies and scandals. Tennis, in particular, witnesses its fair share of drama, both on and off the court, in 2022 due to the Covid-19 vaccination protocol of certain countries and the Ukraine-Russia conflict. It looks like this year isn’t going to be any different, as another controversy has resurfaced with Alexander Zverev‘s new documentary. The incident that was put to rest a month ago is now being talked about once again. The controversy is regarding the time when Alexander Zverev and his ex-girlfriend Olga Sharypova decided to part ways, but it did not end well for either parties.

Zverev, in his recent RTL+ documentary “Zverev – The Unfinished”, has opened up with candor about his life before his girlfriend Sophia Thomalla. He has touched upon sensitive topics like the daughter he co-parents with his ex-girlfriend Brenda Patea and about his relationship with Olga Sharypova. The relationship balled into serious allegations of abuse against Zverev and had been a topic of discussion amongst tennis fans and analysts since October 2020.

In the documentary, Zverev talks about the challenges he faced in his personal life, not leaving out his troubled relationship with Sharypova. He states, “My trust in women has already been a bit broken. That’s no secret.” The tennis star was charged with the allegation of stifling his then-girlfriend Sharypova with a pillow during a fight.

The allegations of domestic violence made against Zverev by Sharypova in 2020 sent shockwaves across the tennis community. Sharypova, who had been in a relationship with Zverev for several years, allegedly accused him of causing physical and emotional distress during their time together. Zverev denied the allegations, calling them unfounded and untrue. A year later, the ATP ordered an investigation on these allegations, but did not convict Zverev owing to the lack of evidence.

However, the controversy surrounding the accusations continued to loom largely over Zverev’s career, affecting his reputation and public image. He said in the documentary, “It was two extremely difficult years in my life. I did everything I could to prove my innocence. I won a court case in Germany. I won a court case in Russia.”

He continued, “The ATP Investigation has revealed that I am innocent. I didn’t understand what was happening at all, but it’s just the way it is.”
