John McEnroe is one of the greatest tennis players of all time. Known for his anger and on-field antics in his playing days, the 63-year-old works as a tennis analyst and commentator now. Apart from his service to tennis, McEnroe has quite some interest in the field of acting as well. Last year he appeared in a small cameo role in the Netflix series, ‘Never have I ever.’

The 63-year-old also voiced the narration of the show. The show covers the life of a teenage Indian American girl, Devi, and her struggles. Later in an interview, McEnroe shared his own challenges growing up, in an age similar to Devi.
Tennis helped McEnroe make friends
Recalling his teenage days, McEnroe said he had difficulty making friends because he used to live far away from his school. Subsequently missing out on the opportunity to gel with both local and school friends.
“Growing up was the toughest time in my life. High school and grammar school was … it just felt like it was not easy. I was in an unusual situation in high school because I commuted into Manhattan. Even though it’s a great private school, I was away from all my friends where I grew up in Queens and it alienated me from both sides a little bit,” he said.

Further, he explained how playing tennis helped him make friends.

“My life changed here [in London] in 1977 when I reached the semifinals and all of a sudden it got a whole lot better. Not immediately, but pretty quickly. So, through sports, I was able to have friendships and teammates. That was really important, but I could feel sort of isolated. You never want to feel that,” he added.
John McEnroe on Golf overtaking tennis in popularity
While tennis is one of the most popular games in the world, the popularity of golf is increasing in the US lately. When asked about his opinion on the same, the former world number 1 jokingly said that golf doesn’t require the intensity and hard work that is needed in tennis. It could be the reason many people prefer golf. Further, he explained how tennis, being a physically demanding game, is good for health and fitness.
