For most of the 21st century, men’s tennis has been undisputedly dominated by the Big 3 – Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic. With a collective grand slam count of 65 between them among countless other accolades, it is safe to say that these 3 set the narrative of the sport for 2 decades. But with that golden era slowly fading away, many experts have already pinned their hopes on 3 impeccably talented youngsters – Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner, and Holger Rune to become the next Big 3 of men’s tennis. 

There is no denying the fact that Alcaraz, Sinner, and Rune are 3 of the most talented prospects from the younger generation of players active on the circuit today. But what does young Danish sensation Holger Rune have to say about such a high-profile comparison? Let’s find out. 

Holger Rune is not ready for new Big 3 discussions

Although it is hard to imagine 3 all-time greats of the game playing tennis in the same era in their prime, it did happen with Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic. Fans and pundits clearly haven’t had enough of the colossal impact their iconic rivalry had on the sport. Therefore, it seems that the tennis world is yearning for their legacy to continue into the new era comprising of a new Big 3 – in the form of Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner, and Holger Rune.

But is it at all wise to tag these young guns as the new Big 3 at such an early stage of their careers? Danish star Holger Rune himself made his views known regarding the same.

Currently placed at number 6 in the ATP rankings, Rune is one of the most promising representatives of the next-gen stars. According to him, however, the time hasn’t arrived to put youngsters like him in the same bracket as Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic.

“It’s too early to say. Only 1 of us has won Grand Slams & that’s Carlos. But we’re young of course, we have time on our side. I have to focus on myself. I’m sure Jannik & Carlos do that as well”, he said, alluding to Alcaraz’s clear dominance over the other 2 members of the proposed new Big 3.

And indeed, it is hard to look past the Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz’s monumental achievements that clearly overshadow those of his contemporaries, including Holger Rune and Jannik Sinner.

Carlos Alcaraz: way ahead of his contemporaries already? 

As much as tennis enthusiasts would crave to witness another epic multi-starrer rivalry brewing among the next-gen stars of men’s tennis, one cannot overlook the fact that 20-year-old Carlos Alcaraz ranks much ahead of most of his contemporaries as far as accomplishments on the tennis court are concerned. Like Rune pointed out, Alcaraz is already a 2-time grand slam winner – an achievement that no other player from his generation can yet boast of.

Moreover, as per many tennis pundits, Alcaraz’s skills on the tennis court are reminiscent of some of the greatest of the game, making him the ideal candidate to become the face of men’s tennis going forward.

Of course, colossal rivalries are one of the most significant aspects of any sport. Hence, it is all the more important for talents like Jannik Sinner and Holger Rune to step up their game on big occasions and pose a serious challenge to Carlos Alcaraz.
