The ongoing US Open is bringing a lot of unexpected moments. After Tommy Paul expressed his desire to win the Slam, Jannik Sinner shattered Paul’s hopes today. While the his chances are gone in ashes, he names his two colleagues, who he hopes will win the slam and bring the lost glory of American tennis back home.
Tommy Paul lost his US Open chance to Italy’s Jannik Sinner at the Round of 16 today. Sinner played an impressive match and defeated the American by 7(7)-6(3), 7(7)-6(5), 6-1. While his dreams of a Grand Slam title ended this season on a sad note, Paul is putting all of his hopes on his two American colleagues, Frances Tiafoe and Taylor Fritz. While Fritz is waiting for his quarterfinal match against Alexander Zverev, Tiafoe will play against Grigor Dimitrov in the Flushing Meadows.
In a press conference for the American Slam, Paul revealed that two Americans might win the Grand Slam title, now that he is evicted. “We have two Americans still left in the tournament but you know it’s never really felt this open in a way so I believe that one of us can,” said the ATP number 14. Previously, Paul hoped he would reunite with Fritz and Tiafoe after passing through Sinner’s on-court rage. Since that dream is shattered after today’s match, Paul is relying on his two friends.

Paul had two crucial opportunities to turn the course of the game. However, he didn’t take any of those and lost the chance to win his match against the Australian Open champion. The two have faced each other 4 times, and Sinner has taken opportunities away from Paul thrice. Sinner’s most significant victory over Paul came in the 2023 Canadian Open, where he defeated the American in the semifinal.

“He stepped up on the big points and I didn’t. I felt like that the story of the match,” Paul said. He hoped to win the slam as an American after 21 years. “That’s where you want to be, It’s electric and walking out, I’m pretty nervous, obviously… it’s a pretty cool place to play tennis,” Paul said in sheer delight.
Tommy Paul’s support for Frances Tiafoe and Taylor Fritz might shower the duo with confidence to fight with more zeal for the tournament title. Whether they win or not, such friendships offer a beautiful side of competitive sports.
