Over the years as a professional tennis player, many have always considered Roger Federer as one of the greatest players to play the game. However, behind his triumphant victories and dominance on the courts for more than two decades lies a strong team and his wife who have always been there to help him whenever he needed them the most. Reflecting on the same, the former Swiss player revealed how important it is for players to have a good support system.

In a recent interview with GQ, the 20-time Grand Slam champion suggested some occasions when the player might not be feeling at his level best and how getting good support could cheer them up. Federer’s journey to tennis greatness was riddled with multiple setbacks. However, having a great set of people by his side motivated him to play his best game on the court. Alongside a string of experienced and understanding coaches, including the likes of Peter Carter and Severin L?thi, one other person has remained his constant pillar of support.

Mirka Federer, Roger’s wife has arguably been the rock behind the Swiss Maestro’s incredible success, standing by his side through the highs and lows of a decades-long professional tennis career. Even during the toughest times of his playing days, she has been there to support him and to give him some much-needed confidence that would help him tackle the obstacles.

“A great will and a great team. You usually have several coaches in the course of your life and career. One who trains you as a baby, you need him for the motivation to go to the court at all. Then you need one for your youthful carelessness and one who knows you, your strengths and weaknesses as a young adult and continues to promote and challenge you. And you should have people around you that you like. After all, you travel a lot during a career, are often only surrounded by your own team. You are tired, homesick and maybe struggling with an injury. You need support there,” said Federer while giving credit to his team.

When it comes to grass courts, one name towers above all others. As Roger Federer graced the Wimbledon Championships this year, they marked the first time that he attended the championship as a player and not as a coach.

For the emotional day, Federer was accompanied by his constant support, Mirka, at the tournament. As soon as the Swiss great stepped on the court, he received a standing ovation of around 10 minutes for the miracles that he had produced on the courts over the years.
