It hasn’t been the easiest of times for Carlos Alcaraz ever since winning his maiden Wimbledon Championships title earlier this year. Despite having a consistent run across tournaments since then, the 20-year-old has failed to land a killer punch, making exits during the business end of the tournaments. Additionally, he lost the Number 1 ranking to Novak Djokovic after failing to defend his US Open title. And just two weeks ago, he was hit by another tragic news.

Alcaraz is currently in Shanghai, China to participate in the ATP 1000 Shanghai Masters. After his second-round victory, he paid a heartfelt tribute to somebody who was crucial in the Spaniard’s formative years and had had a close call just a fortnight ago.

Last month, José Manuel Madrona, the legendary tennis coach, was involved in a freak motorcycle accident. In what was a near-fatal blow, he lost a leg after severe impact with a car. Over the last 28 years, Madrona has changed the face of Ferrero Tennis Academy while serving the roles of manager, sports director, and a coach.

Alcaraz, who had received a bye in the first round of the Shanghai Masters, defeated Gregoire Barrere of France in the second round. After his victory, the Spaniard penned an emotional note for Madrona. He wrote on the camera, “Madrona, this victory is for you,” along with a heart shape. Alcaraz knows Madrona personally and has good relations with him. As a result, the reigning Wimbledon champion was left heartbroken after hearing about Madrona’s freak accident.
