There is no denying that Carlos Alcaraz, who is just 20, has already become one of the best players on the men’s tour, given his two Grand Slam triumphs. However, after his triumphant campaign in the Wimbledon Championship, the young Spaniard is now struggling to find his best on-court level. During the hard court season, the 20-year-old has faced a number of initial-round defeats at the ATP Masters events in Shanghai and Paris.

Even at the Nitto ATP Finals, the former world No. 1 player failed to make amends as he was defeated in the opener in Turin. Now, ahead of their group stage meeting, Alcaraz’s recent struggles have prompted his Russian opponent, Daniil Medvedev, to draw parallels between the Spaniard and the ‘younger’ version of Novak Djokovic.

After making his debut at the season-ending championship, the second-seeded Spaniard was stunned by Alexander Zverev in the opening group match. While many in the tennis community saw it as an upset, Daniil Medvedev wasn’t surprised at his upcoming opponent’s defeat in the opener, according to his recent disclosures.

In his post-match press conference at the ATP Finals, the Russian tennis star stated that the young Spaniard is far from the confidence levels he has shown throughout the season. Medvedev also said, “At this moment, for whatever reason, we feel that Carlos plays just a little bit slower.”

However, the former world No. 1 asserted that it can happen to everyone on the men’s tour while mentioning how Novak Djokovic also faced similar challenges during his ‘younger’ phase. He added, “This can happen to everyone. This even happened to Novak when he was younger.”

The former US Open champion also brought to light the notable difference in groundstroke pace between the two ATP superstars, saying it was clear the Spaniard was far away from his optimum levels.

During the candid discussion, the 27-year-old asserted how the German tennis player delivered some ferocious groundstrokes that were 10 kilometers faster than Alcaraz. Medvedev said, “Sascha was like 10 kilometers higher than Carlos. This is very surprising.”

The Russian went on to open up about how he felt that the 2-time singles Grand Slam champion was not performing at his best on-court levels from the very start of his group stage match against Zverev. However, Medvedev added that their three-set match later turned out to be an entertaining watch while he also talked about his excitement to face his opponents in his group.
