Despite getting off to a slow start in the Roland Garros final, Novak Djokovic closes out a tight first against Casper Ruud in 83 minutes. Serving first, Casper Ruud was off to a flyer, being 3-0 up in almost no time. But we have all heard of the saying,” When the going gets tough, the tough get going”. The phrase was literally made for Novak Djokovic.

The world number 3 broke Ruud’s serve as soon as he saw an opening and got back on track. He took the opener to a tiebreak where he brought his best level. Djokovic took the tiebreak 7-1 and closed out the opener.

Novak Djokovic was applauded widely for his tiebreak excellence in this tournament. He has won all 6 breakers. To make things look even greater, he has hit 17 winners and zero unforced errors across 55 points. Rennae Stubbs was among the first to acknowledge Djokovic’s tiebreak exploits.

Patrick Mouratoglou joined in and appreciated the fact that Djokovic has a 100% tiebreak record in this tournament.

Andy Roddick used a funny clip to hint towards his old quote where he had mentioned Djokovic taking away the soul of the opponent.

Djokovic gains full control of the match

The Serb started the second set from where he had left. He held his serve to love and broke Ruud immediately to take a solid lead. Ruud couldn’t do much against a redlining Djokovic who held his serve firmly for the remainder of the set thereby winning it 6-3. During the second set, Nick Kyrgios showed his support towards the Serb by using the Serbian flag emoticon.

After a fairly comfortable second set, Djokovic had to work hard to get to the top in the third. Ruud was serving first and did not look to drop his serve up until the very end. He even had his chances where Djokovic was 0-30 on his serve but the Serb clutched in like he always does. When the pressure was at the highest, he broke Ruud to love at 5-5 and served out to win the unprecedented 23rd grand slam title, with the scoreline 7-6(1) 6-3 7-5.

Novak Djokovic now becomes the first male player to win 23 grand slam titles. He also becomes the only male player to complete the triple career slam by winning all three slams at least thrice. Statistically, there is no debate against him being the greatest player of all time anymore.
