It’s been a long time since tennis fans got to see Argentine legend Juan Martin del Potro in action. The former World No. 3 has struggled to play since June 2019 owing to a knee injury. While del Potro has hinted at retirement, he still hasn’t officially called time on his professional tennis career. As a result, tennis fans are still hopeful that they will get to witness the Argentine play at least one competitive match before he retires. Right now, however, the 2009 US Open champion is firmly focused on padel.
In a recent Instagram post, del Potro revealed what he’s up to on the padel front. Turns out that the Argentine is promoting the racket sport in Miami and is very much involved in the inaugural edition of the Pro Padel League.

The Pro Padel League is a game-changer for padel, a racket sport whose popularity is rapidly skyrocketing in America. In April, the Miami Padel Club announced del Potro as its strategic advisor. Last weekend, the league started, and del Potro took to Instagram to share his excitement with his followers.
In his Instagram post, del Potro wrote, “This weekend was epic! The birth of a club, the birth of a league”. He also went on to congratulate Miami Padel Club’s players for putting in a stellar shift. “What a great performance from the players. I am so proud to be part of Miami Padel Club.”

Del Potro’s role as Miami Padel Club’s strategic advisor will be instrumental in making the sport even more popular in the days ahead. Even though padel dates back to the 1960s when it was invented in Mexico, its popularity always had to take a backseat to tennis. However, things are changing, and del Potro is definitely playing his part in facilitating the changes.
