Can Jannik Sinner rise to the challenge and dethrone Carlos Alcaraz in their next encounter?

“Escape from Alcaraz vs Sin City is the gold standard in tennis,” said Coco Gauff‘s ex-coach Brad Gilbert about the ongoing rivalry between Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz. The blockbuster China Open final on Wednesday saw Alcaraz come back from a set down to defeat Sinner 6-7 (6/8), 6-4, 7-6 (7/3). This win marked Alcaraz’s first China Open title, his fourth ATP title of the year, and his 16th overall. The three-hour long match, full of physicality, dramatic moments, and impressive rallies, ignited a new rivalry on court, reminiscent of the Big 3’s epic matches. Even Sinner acknowledges this.

In a post match conference, world No. 1 was asked, “You mentioned you’re sure you’re going to play Carlos more in the future. What is your take on the rivalry between you and Carlos?” The Italian couldn’t back down from acknowledging the fierce rivalry(with a 6-4 H2H in the favor of Alcaraz) between the two since 2021. “Yeah, I feel like it’s always great when we meet, no? We try to push ourself and each other to the limits.”

Sinner also had to accept a staggering reality in front of the Spaniard, who has become the youngest to conquer on all three surfaces at just 21: “He for me is a point where I work.” Furthermore, he noted areas in his own game that need polishing, even after a massive season(attaining the No. 1 position and having won two hard court majors): There are also other players, but today I saw a couple of things where I need to get better.”.

Alcaraz, however, was quick to show his respect for Sinner after the win. He spoke highly of the Italian’s achievements and the determination to work hard. “What can I say about you? The year you’re having is unbelievable. You deserve it,” Alcaraz said in his post-match speech. He also praised Sinner’s team and highlighted the effort they put in every day.

“I’ve seen you working when I come to the club. You’re really, really humble. That makes you an even better success,” he added. The Spaniard also highlighted that beyond the on-court rivalry, his respect for Sinner still remains intact. “I respect you a lot as a player but even more as a person,” Alcaraz said.

Why John McEnroe said Jannik Sinner v Carlos Alcaraz has ‘all the makings of a great match’

Tennis legend John McEnroe expressed his excitement back at the French Open semi-final between Alcaraz and Sinner. That meeting was their ninth encounter, and the H2H was tied 4-4. Rising to the occasion, McEnroe highlighted, “That’s what it’s all about. Tennis is an individual sport, but you need rivals and rivalries, and that certainly is the most obvious one. They’re 4-4 head-to-head and Jannik has broken through and won a major. So they’re sort of on more or less equal footing.”

The Eurosport expert praised both players but also explained how closely matched they were. At just 22 years of age, Sinner had already broken through by winning a major, while 21-year-old Alcaraz has his own place with 4 grand slams already under his belt. McEnroe believed their rivalry still keeps them as equals: “It’s got all the makings of a great match… tough call to see who wins,” ahead of the French Open clash between them.

McEnroe also dropped clear signs of having a whole hearted respect for this amazing rivalry. “I just hope and pray these two stay healthy for the next 10 years,” he said, expressing his wish to see more of these high-stakes battles in the future. As both the top ranked pros now take flights to Shanghai, another competitive track is waiting for their entry.
