This time, next month, Roger Federer completes a year of his emotional farewell to professional tennis. But what lies on is his legacy and the records he created. Many records of the Swiss legend remain untouched. The commencement of the US Open means remembering one feat that the former number one achieved, to which no one came close, not even the Serbian legend Novak Djokovic.

Though?Djokovic is on his way to smash records and create his legacy, one triumph is impossible for him to equal, let alone surpass. However, the Serb has a contrasting viewpoint as he focused on a different track.

The 42-year-old Swiss legend has won 5 US Open titles and was only two titles short of equaling the record for most titles. But Federer achieved all the five titles consecutively. He dominated Flushing Meadows from 2004 to 2009. The number of titles the Swiss legend won can be surpassed, but his back-to-back claim? It looks impossible for now.

In the pre-tournament press conference, Djoker was confronted with Federer’s record. The Serb was asked what lies in this hard court tournament that even he could not reach the record. The ATP 2nd seed played 9 US Open finals but won only 3. Referring to this, he said, “Well, I actually lost more finals here than I won in my career. My score in the finals of US Open is the worst of all slams I think. There’s some very close finals that I lost; some that I won.”

Ignoring the past records and focusing only on his positive results, the 23 Grand Slam titles winner said, “But generally I think the consistency of results here has been pretty good. I mean, I’ve played most of my US Open editions at least quarterfinals or better throughout the last 15 years.”

But Djoker has revealed one thing that crossed his mind regarding the last Slam of the year.

Djoker’s unusual assessment of the most popular major

The Serb expressed that the reason behind his or any ATP players not being able to achieve Federer’s glory is because the US Open is the last Slam. Professionals would exhaust themselves for 8 months playing continuous tennis. Djoker stated that the last Slam of the year holds many surprises compared to the previous ones. He confirmed that these are the only things that come to his mind and nothing else.

Djokovic’s 23 Grand Slams glory is still in people’s minds despite his Wimbledon Championships loss. It is not easy for a 36-year-old to exhaust ATP No. 1, Carlos Alcaraz, who is 16 years junior to the Serb. The ATP 2nd seed was moved to tears when he gave his post-match speech at Wimbledon. He was so close to the glory he almost savored it, but it was destined for the Spaniard.

With the Cincinnati Masters title, Djoker got his revenge against Alcaraz, but the Serb needed more. Though he cannot equal Federer’s record, he can indeed aim to equal Margaret Court’s 24 Slams with his current form. Will Djokovic grab his glory at the Slam that disappointed him the most? Let us know in the comments.
