World no.16, Gael Monfils had a pretty good Australian Open run this year. The Frenchman reached the quarter-finals after some impressive performances in the previous rounds. Unfortunately, he fell to Matteo Berrettini in the quarter-final and his search for a Grand Slam title continues. 

After the Australian Open exit, Monfils took part in the Open Sud de France in Montpellier. Sadly, the Frenchman lost in the first round against Mikael Ymer. Incidentally, this was Monfils’ first tournament in France and he felt really disappointed after the loss, as he expressed himself on social media.

Previously, Gael Monfils has won the tournament in Montpellier three times (2010,’14,’20). The 35-year-old wanted to bounce back at Open Sud de France after the Australian Open disappointment by winning this tournament. However, he lost to 23-year-old Swedish player, Mikael Ymer, by 1-6,2-6. After the loss, Monfils expressed his disappointment on Twitter in a series of Tweets. 

“I haven’t been good tonight. I don’t want to tweet only the victories and the positive side. I played badly and it would be too easy to say that I should have done it like this or like that. I know that many of you were expecting me at the highest level for my first tournament of the year in France and I am the first to be disappointed,” Monfils wrote.

“The season is just beginning. There will be great matches, rotten matches, disappointments, and victories. But that’s also tennis. We win together but we also lose together. Now it’s time to recover well and prepare for the next tournament. Thanks for the support,” the Frenchman further wrote

Will Monfils ever win a Grand Slam?

Known as the entertainer, Monfils has a tremendous athletic ability to succeed in this sport. Every year, He produces some incredible shots, and they were always a contender for a top 10 shot of the year. Despite all that, he has never been to a Grand Slam Final. Although, he came close a couple of times, as he reached the semi-finals at the 2008 French Open and 2016 US Open. 

Earlier, Monfils had already expressed his desire to win at least one Grand Slam title before he retires. Maybe he needs to take inspiration from Rafael Nadal. If the Spaniard can do it at the age of 35, he can do it as well.
