In 2020, on the eve of the 50th anniversary of the Nitto ATP Finals, ATP Tour had a chat with players from different eras to retell some of the tournament?s most memorable stories. Roger Federer appreciated the impossible shot making by Bjorn Borg, and likewise, the legendary Swedish player appreciated the overall game of the Swiss Maestro.

Roger Federer, arguably the greatest tennis player of all time, is set to retire from the sport in the upcoming Laver Cup. He will play under the aegis of Borg, and will join fellow legends in the sport like Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, and Andy Murray.

Federer compliments Borg’s aggressive backhand style

During the heavily star studded chat, Federer spoke, “you know my battle has been my whole life to make sure I can hit the four backhands in a row over the court nicely” and he added that the legendary Bjorn Borg could close his eyes and do it.

“I’ve always admired Bjorn the way he carried himself, what he did for the game and that’s why you’re the king, Bjorn,” Roger added enthusiastically. In recent years, Federer has struggled with several injuries that have significantly reduced the effectiveness of his once dominant backhand. The last match the Swiss Maestro was seen in full flow was against Novak Djokovic at the 2019 Wimbledon final.

Roger Federer and Bjorn Borg share the champions’ mentality

The upcoming Laver Cup will see the 20-time grand slam champion take the court in a competitive setting for the last time. Roger Federer, who has held on to the world no.1 ranking for the longest consecutive stretch, 237weeks, is heavily inspired by Bjorn Borg. Borg has won 11 Grand Slam titles: five Wimbledon and six French Open titles. Although Borg decided to walk away from tennis at just 26 years of age, he was the first player in the modern era to win more than 10 Grand Slams.
