Nick Kyrgios is a month away from his anticipated return to tennis with the Australian Open in January. After almost two years, due to prolonged injuries, he will step on the court. While fans are looking forward to the former World No.13’s appearance, a new social media update from the Aussie has painted a concerning picture. But what is it?
Kyrgios took to his Instagram on Thursday and shared a clip featuring him and his doubles partner and compatriot Thanasi Kokkinakis. For the unversed, they both have won the Australian Open together. Back in 2022, before Kyrgios went into a recovery phase, he had managed to lift the trophy at the Grand Slam with Kokkinakis. In the final encounter, they defeated Matt Ebden and Max Purcell 7-5, 6-4 in straight sets. In his latest Instagram post, Nick revealed that Thanasi will be his doubles partner once again in the upcoming Australian Open edition. “KING 👑 x KOKK 🍆 ….. WE WILL BE BACK FOR THE @australianopen ….” he wrote. But then he also added an unexpected twist to this post saying, “Expect a rollercoaster….. one last time.”

So what does it mean? Will Nick Kyrgios play his last Australian Open next month? Or is he indicating that it will be his last outing with Kokkinakis as his doubles partner? One can’t really make an assumption at the moment. At least not until he comes out with a proper clarification.
However, his latest Instagram post seems to have debunked a previous rumor. It suggested that he and his good friend Novak Djokovic may become doubles partners in the Australian Open. Earlier this week, Kyrgios had shared a story in which he dropped a picture of him and Djokovic together. Along with it, he had also shared a response to a fan who asked him to say something special about the 24-time Grand Slam winner. “Absolute legend,” he wrote while adding a mysterious line that read, “could have some exciting news soon.” He then mentioned two eye emojis and the “GOAT” emoji to admire the Serbian tennis legend. This story was enough to send anyone into a frenzy and believe that he was hinting at a collaboration with Djokovic.
But now, it seems highly unlikely after the Australian’s confirmation of his association with Kokkinakis. Speaking of the latter, he’s already confident of his partner ahead of the Major tournament next month.

The former World No. 65 in singles thinks his doubles partner will shine in Australia. “It’s gonna be great for tennis, great for fans in Australia, fans all over the world,” he said in an interaction with Canberra Times, dated December 12. Kokkinakis mentioned that Kyrgios’ “a different cat. Obviously has a different sort of energy about him, and he’s a hell of a player, so I think people are going to love having him back.”
Speaking on his comeback after persistent injuries, he said, “It’s been a long time coming. I think he’s been ready for a while now to play.” He revealed that Kyrgios had been in good shape for a while already. But he wanted to make sure that he was actually fit to step on the court. That’s why he took an extra time in announcing his return to action last month.
When asked if he would see Kyrgios hitting the ground running, Kokkinakis replied, “Yeah, definitely.” He also mentioned that Kyrgios is a highly talented tennis player and praised his powerful serving ability. According to him, if he remains free from any future injury, hopefully, he can be a really dangerous player against anyone.

On an interesting note, however, he did confess that the priority for both of them in the event will be their singles campaigns. Despite winning the doubles title in 2022, they are not focusing too much on that category. Per him, it’s been “tricky” and it’s “because everyone loved it last time, we loved it, it was so much fun,” he said. “We feel like we owe it to people to get back out there and have some fun. It’s not something we’ve practised, but yeah, singles is definitely the goal,” he added.
What do you have to say about their partnership? Will they perform better individually or clinch the trophy as a team once again in the Australian Open? Let us know in the comments below.
