Recently on a podcast episode of ‘The Habit Coach with Ashdin Doctor’ on Spotify, Ashdin invited tennis coach Gabe Jaramillo. During the podcast, Gabe talked about the tennis legends back-to-back and opened up about their routines. He also talked about why they follow these routines and how it helps them.

He said, “Every time he (Agassi) came on the court, he cleaned the court, he spent five, six minutes, but that court had to be spotless before he started the practice every time. That was his routine. And when we asked him, “Why do you do that?” (Agassi’s response in Jaramillo’s words) “If the court is clean, it gives me a sense of calmness, if the court is a mess, I have that in my mind that something is wrong.” And that’s what you see also with Nadal, all the stuff that he does before he starts the match, he lines up bottles, looks at his stance, and shows the same routine. He goes “It’s a way for me to calm my mind. it’s for me to know everything is organized, everything is in order.

Even Rafa’s fans will agree with how keeping an organized surrounding has helped him to be more productive. And we are sure, this routine worked like magic for many other tennis legends as well. But that’s just one side to it. Some of the tennis fans and players also refer to Nadal’s habit of obsessive cleaning as superstitious. Especially because it extends beyond the court as well.

Nadal’s cleaning habit extends beyond the court, making it look superstitious

A few years back, a video of Rafael Nadal went viral on the internet where he was seen following the process of obsessive cleaning that he has in the gym. Some of the Spanish tennis legend’s habits on the court include keeping water bottles placed perfectly before the change of ends. He also follows a strict rule of tugging his underpants and flicking his hair before every serve.

But no one expected him to follow such routines in his gym as well. People usually clean the equipment with a wipe after using it. But Nadal cleaned the whole treadmill before setting foot on it. He didn’t just wipe it, but rapidly cleaned it thoroughly.
