Juan Martin Del Potro has been away from the tour for the last 2.5 years. Having last played in June 2019, at the Queens Club event in London, the Argentinian suffered a knee injury, which forced him to be out for the rest of the season.
Del Potro has stayed away from the tour for two seasons now. However, he is determined to make a comeback at this year’s Buenos Aires event. Even though he has been seen practicing, it isn’t as good as it sounds. The former World No. 3 is still recovering.

Notably, during his practice sessions, Del Potro experienced discomfort in his knee. Canceling some of his practices, he then underwent a new infiltration in his knee, in order to reduce the discomfort.
Del Potro continues to recover from his knee injury
Del Potro suffered a knee injury while playing against Denis Shapovalov in the first round at the ATP 500 Queen’s Club 2019. The injury forced Del Potro to not only withdraw from the tournament but also to withdraw from the season.
After staying away from the tour since 2019, the Argentinian wants to be back on the tour at Buenos Aires 2022. However, the comeback is still in doubt as he continues to suffer from the injury. On 28th January, tennis writer Jose Morgado took to his Twitter, resharing senior journalist Sebastian Torok’s post.
The post was an update on Del Potro’s injury. Morgado captioned the tweet, “This isn’t exactly great news.”

The original post put out by Sebastian Torok was a synopsis of an article posted by La NACION, a daily newspaper in Argentina. As per the post, Juan has not fully recovered from the injury yet. Feeling discomfort during his practice in January, he has also undergone an infiltration in his knee.
Juan Martin Del Potro and his injury saga
Del Potro underwent multiple knee surgeries to overcome his knee injury. The 33-year-old underwent his first surgery in June 2019, when he suffered the injury. He underwent the next surgery in January 2020. Not getting enough relief, Del Potro underwent another surgery in August 2020.

Even after getting 3 surgeries done, the 2018 US Open finalist failed to recover fully. The result forced him to undergo a fourth surgery in March 2021.

After resting post the surgery, the ‘Tower of Tandil’ was back on court practicing in June 2021. Currently ranked 755th in the world, fans around the globe are hopeful of seeing the tall player back on the court, hitting his vintage forehand groundstrokes.
