Can Taylor Fritz finally conquer Jannik Sinner, or will history repeat itself in Turin?

‘Destined for the prize, but you can’t get a rise out them’. Taylor Fritz and Jannik Sinner seldom forfeit that; their composed demeanor under duress speaks volumes. After dodging Russian star Daniil Medvedev‘s antics and nasty meltdown during the ATP Finals round-robin opener, American Fritz will have to face another strong challenge. He’s due for his US Open replay against top seed Sinner.

Both players will commence their highly anticipated showdown after bagging one victory in their group, respectively. While Fritz humbled Medvedev, the Italian star downed Alex de Minaur in the opening clash. Having witnessed the American player’s emotional loss to Sinner in the New York summit clash, reporters were eager to know his revised strategy against Sinner, which doesn’t lead to a similar outcome at the year-end championship.

During a presser at the ATP Finals, Fritz highlighted that playing Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic in recent months, following his US Open final defeat to Sinner, helped him gain significant experience and an idea of what to improve. “After I played him at the Open, I played Carlos the next week at Laver Cup, I played Novak right after in Shanghai. I feel like those three matches I learned a lot about where I needed to improve. I think I’ve done a good job since then, working on those things and improving. I’m excited at the opportunity to see if what I’ve been doing will help me”. Meanwhile, Sinner trailed behind to post his views on their upcoming blockbuster.

While talking to the media, the reigning Australian Open champion acknowledged the American player’s strongholds, all the while aiming to raise the bar while battling against him. “He has improved a lot in the past two years. Serving much better. Hitting the ball very hard. He’s a great competitor. I will have to be at my top if I want to win or if I want to get close. It’s going to be tough.” Despite losing to the young talent, Fritz will have taken great confidence from his runner-up finish in New York.

In an interview with the ‘ATP Tour’, the World No. 5 discussed what’s changed since his semifinal ATP Finals debut in 2022. “My first time [at the Nitto ATP Finals], I was the alternate, no one expected much of me here. So, I was playing with house money, no pressure. This time, I’m fifth, and I want to make it out of the group stage. I’m putting more expectation on myself to do better, I’m just a better player and I’m super happy with how I played today.”

With the date set for his clash with Sinner, the American sensation will look to exact revenge. Both players will take to the court and test their luck on Wednesday, November 13.
