Jannik Sinner's doping saga: Is the ATP too lenient, or is this just a witch hunt?

Jannik Sinner dodges a bullet, aiming to keep his eye on the prize as he prepares for the US Open. The International Tennis Integrity Agency’s (ITIA) decision to clear Sinner, despite failing two drug tests, has sparked criticism over perceived inconsistencies in the sport. Now, Taylor Fritz takes a fresh stance on the ongoing doping saga.

Several tennis stars, including Nick Kyrgios and Denis Shapovalov, have spoken out against the sport’s apparent inconsistencies, particularly in light of recent judgments by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA).

The scandal surrounding Jannik Sinner’s clearance after failing two drug tests earlier this year has raised questions about the regulating organizations’ impartiality and openness. While players argued over the same, Fritz has a totally different take on the doping saga, as he recently shared his take in an interview with Front Office Sports.

He stated, “Yeah, I mean, I don’t I don’t know I’d have to look into it before really saying anything on it but I mean I’m sure that if they weren’t, I’m sure that they aren’t banning him then whatever was in his system must have been like a very little amount because if there was a solid amount of I guess the band substance in anybody’s system.”

In addition, he said, “I would assume that they’re actually going to get banned for sure. So I’d have to obviously look more into it.” Conversely, Nick Kyrgios did not mince words, calling the whole Sinner situation “ridiculous.” Whether or not Sinner is cleared by the ITIA, he claimed that he should be suspended for a minimum of two years for failing two drug tests.

Kyrgios stated, “Ridiculous – whether it was accidental or planned. You get tested twice with a banned (steroid) substance… you should be gone for 2 years. Your performance was enhanced. Massage cream [the reported method of contamination]… Yeah nice.”

Marco Bortolotti supports Jannik Sinner: “Can’t just go out and say”

Bortolotti encountered a similar circumstance at the end of 2023, but his case was settled without a suspension in less than three months. Similar to Jannik Sinner, Bortolotti’s case was kept under wraps until it was resolved. Now that Sinner is being accused of receiving special treatment because of his high standing, Bortolotti has stepped up to support him.

He stated, “Yes, exactly (my case wasn’t made public), also because first you have to do all the checks and assessments of the case. You can’t just go out and say ‘he was found positive’ and that’s it, you don’t even know what substance.”

Bortolotti argued that Sinner’s situation mirrors his own, emphasizing that the resolution process should be respected regardless of a player’s ranking. Subsequently, what are your thoughts on the doping saga? Do let us know in the comment section below.
