Taylor Fritz calls the Laver Cup a 'breath of fresh air'—do you agree with him?

It was a terrific season for the American star, Taylor Fritz. Though a few tournaments are yet to be played, the biggest events, the four Grand Slams of the season, are over. Fritz can celebrate after capping his season with the US Open runner-up trophy, even though the title would have been better multiple-folds. And now, after battling the pressure individually on the court, the American star is enjoying the team tennis at the Laver Cup. But why does he think the Laver Cup is one of the most fun tournaments during the season? Let’s find out.

Fritz certainly made some great strides this season. He clinched 2 titles, winning the Delray Beach Open and the Eastbourne International, in addition to an Olympic bronze medal. However, despite making headway in the individual events, Fritz seems to be enjoying more at the Roger Federer’s Laver Cup as compared to other tournaments. Why? The sole reason lies in the fact that, at Laver Cup, he is with the team, rather than the lone man standing.

Fritz opened up about his mindset at the Laver Cup, during an interview on September 14th. He said, “Laver Cup is one of the most fun weeks of the year… Getting the chance to celebrate with the team is always my favorite.” The Laver Cup setup is one of a kind in tennis. Well, the Davis Cup is also a team tournament, but when it comes to the Laver Cup, the best players from around the world turn up on the same stage, as Team Europe takes on Team World. The teamwork and energy are altogether different from any tournament in the circuit.

Fritz further elaborated on how the Laver Cup is like a breath of fresh air. He said, “It’s something that you don’t get to do in tennis because it’s individual, you’re only celebrating with your team, you’re not celebrating with the other players so that’s something that’s always so fun for me.” Undoubtedly, what could be more fun than a group of friends playing together, cheering for each other, and hoping to win together? It’s an all-in-one combo!

“I have more fun when I’m around all the guys and we’re hanging out and we’re all rooting for each other. We all want the same thing, you know?” Fritz further remarked. He also elaborated on the big shift in mindset during the Laver Cup.

Moreover, the American star opened up on how the Laver Cup provides a different mindset while tackling a team challenge. He said, “When I’m there watching them, I’m not at all thinking about them being my rivals. That’s such an amazing thing about the week, just for that week, these guys are my teammates, I want them to win the match as much as I want myself to win the match.”

Laver Cup presents a unique opportunity for tennis players to be friends with their competitors. In addition, fans enjoy the pairing up of the top players, which they could have only wished for.
