Noticing the weird timing of the forfeit, Stan Wawrinka was wowed by the event.
The astounding move by Gaston added to his long list of controversies. One of his most recent disagreeable behaviors took place recently against Borna Coric where Gaston interrupted the point by throwing his ball during active play.

Hugo Gaston stepped into the Internazionali di Tennis Città di Verona with the aim of performing his best. The French player tried his hands at an ATP Challenger Tour but did not find acceptable results. In his first-round bout, Gaston played Marco Trungelliti and won his first set. Unfortunately for the Frenchman, he went on to lose the second set.
In the third set, Gaston was close to losing the match as the scoreboard read 2-5, 0-40. In fear of having his serve broken and losing the match, Gaston decided to forfeit and gave Trungelliti a walkover.
Tennis Letter shared the situation on their Twitter page as they wrote, “Hugo Gaston retired at 2-5, 0-40 in the final set against Trungelliti. Wow.” Stan Wawrinka decided to add to the incredulous move as he simply replied, “Wow“, to the tweet.

The young French player is a rather controversial figure and this move only added to his long list of debacles.

Hugo Gaston charged with a hefty fine
In the Madrid Open, Gaston faced the 2020 ATP Star of Tomorrow Borna Coric in the first round. During his serve, he chose to throw his second ball out while the ball was still in play. As per rules, the point is supposed to be a let and replayed but the point was awarded to Coric. After the match, Gaston was given a hefty fine of $156,000 as the ATP stated it was the fifth instance of unsportsmanlike behavior.

Many ridiculed the amount of the charge. But the ATP reduced it to $78,000 after an appeal by Gaston. However, he was warned that another instance would see a much harsher penalty. The French player is surrounded by controversies at such an early age, how many more are in his future?
