It seems that Nick Kyrgios has found a synonym for his name – controversy! The latest one is probably the biggest and most damaging to date on Kyrgios’ long list. The latest controversy surrounding the Aussie tennis star shocked fans for two reasons. The World No. 20 pleaded guilty to an old charge, as he appeared in court on crutches; assaulting his ex-girlfriend. However, what shook the fans more was the verdict of the case.
Earlier, Kyrgios tried to get the criminal charges dismissed on grounds of poor mental health. However, as he failed to get a favorable result, the Aussie tennis sensation admitted to being guilty of assaulting his ex-girlfriend. Further, the ground on which the verdict was given in favor of the World No.20 rattled the tennis fans to the core.

Nick Kyrgios appeared at the Canberra court on crutches, with his mother and current girlfriend supporting his cause. Although the guilty plea of the Aussie surprised many, the fact that Kyrgios avoided criminal conviction enraged fans. According to the BBC, the judge announced the verdict in his favor, stating the incident as a single act of stupidity.
When the official Twitter handle of the Tennis Channel posted about the same, tennis fans stormed the microblogging site to express their views. One fan questioned if Kyrgios would be suspended from tennis following his confession. He tweeted, “Oh the Netlifx “Golden boy”. Maybe next time you should check a person’s background before making them the main character to represent a sport. Anyway, will he get suspended from tennis?”

And the famous tennis journalist, Ben Rothenberg, found the resolution strange, to say the least. He could understand the 3rd reason for the incident being an isolated one, but not the other two, as they didn’t stand their ground, according to Rothenberg.
This is a…very strange resolution to the common assault charge against Nick Kyrgios. https://t.co/P11sAGZUr6

I understand that for the third reason (seen as isolated incident with no previous record). But I don’t understand the other two reasons cited (publicity and elapsed time), I don’t think those should be mitigating when it comes to adjudication. https://t.co/8M0nZYUx4t

A slap on the wrist (if that) and a "don't do it again" in exchange for a guilty plea. The time "elapsed" was due to Kyrgios wanting to keep playing tennis. Mess. I wonder what the ATP will do with this guilty plea 🙄 https://t.co/mWCGgfZbXh

Nick Kyrgios' charge dismissed by the judge after he pleaded guilty. Canberra judge said the publicity of the trial, the time that has elapsed since the incident, and the fact that it appeared to be a one-off incident, meant the case did not warrant a conviction @smh @theage

Back in 2021, Kyrgios’ then-girlfriend levied charges of assault against him, after the Wimbledon Championships 2022 finalist pushed her to the ground. However, Kyrgios has repeatedly mentioned not being in the right state of mind at the time, as he was suffering from depression; consequently, resorting to drug and alcohol abuse.
