Roger Federer is a class player. With his own unique style of play, he enhanced people’s outlook on the sport of tennis. He made a one-handed backhand look easy, something that was widely practiced back in the day. But the biggest question is: after the 42-year-old Swiss legend, is the one-handed backhand era over? Recently, Andy Roddick brought up the same topic in his podcast, where he recalled how there was a time when everybody avoided having this playing-style conversation just because of Federer.

Along with that, Roddick also shed insight on Federer’s enormous influence not only on the sport but also on the broader discussion of tennis techniques and tactics, focusing on the one-handed backhand and how it is something that will never be the same again.

The 41-year-old former American tennis player, in the recent episode of ‘Served with Andy Roddick’, opened up about how there was a time when the 20-time Grand Slam champion dominated a particular tennis skill in such a way that he kept the dying playing style alive in the most beautiful manner.

While talking about whether the one-hand era was over, Roddick opened up about how Roger Federer kept it alive. He stated, “I think we kind of avoided this conversation for a long time largely because of Roger, and what a supernatural talent he was, on that side a magician.”

But now that Federer has retired, the particular tennis skill is also gone. The Swiss Maestro dominated that skill so well that he seemed like a magician on the court. But then, with time, things changed, and now, Roddick shared his thoughts on the same era coming to an end.

Jimmy Connors on watching Federer’s one-handed backhand

In a recent episode of ‘Advantage Connors’, he talked about how the one-handed backhand of Roger Federer was mesmerizing and beautiful to watch on the tennis court. He stated, “And that and that’s what makes tennis so exciting. Because if you look at the guys, you know, starting, you know, way back with the, you know, Gonzalez and Segura and, you know, leading up to my generation, and then you know, Edberg and Becker and Sampras and Courier and then the Federer generation now, that’s what makes tennis so exciting that if everybody played the same, it’s still fun.”

Not only that, Connors also highlighted how there is something pretty about that shot, and how it looks amazing when the player is about to take the shot. Moreover, as tennis evolved with time and made through different generations, the 42-year-old tennis legend sustained the timeless elegance even after being in a generation that had Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, who are much into two-handed backhands.
