Serbian tennis great Novak Djokovic won the 10th Australian Open title yesterday. It has been a great redemption after his deportation from the country last year. A rule change this year accommodated the Serb to come back and compete in the first Grand Slam of the year.
Now that Djokovic boards the plane back home with two trophies from Australia, people are still talking about his decision last year. Djokovic didn’t play at the Australian Open and the US Open last year. But who should take the blame for it? Djokovic himself of the Authorities? Two senior commentators of ESPN John McEnroe and Chris Fowler engaged in a tense discussion regarding the same. Here’s what happened.

John McEnroe has time and again condemned the authorities to not allowing one of the top tennis players in the world, Novak Djokovic, to play in the Grand Slam events. While Djokovic chose to not vaccinate himself with the covid-19 vaccine, other sections of people, including Fowler, believe that the Serb himself is responsible for missing out.

Yesterday, while covering Djokovic’s final win, McEnroe and Fowler engaged in a heated argument. Here’s the full conversation.
“He gets deported out of Australia. Doesn’t get any points at Wimbledon,” McEnroe said. “Can’t play the [U.S.] Open. …” McEnroe said.
Interrupting him in between, Fowler said, “A part of his choices, to be fair. He made choices that led to that for some of those things.”
McEnroe responded, “I don’t think … I think he should have been committed to play.”
Continuing the argument, Fowler added, “OK, well that’s a debate. But that’s forgot for the moment.”
Djokovic got the opportunity to play in Australia but it seems hard for him to play in the US Open this year as well.

After last year’s deportation debacle, Djokovic got the image of a villain in Australia. In order to show support for the government’s decision, the Australian public was against Djokovic. When Djokovic finally got an opportunity to return to Australia this year, the authorities predicted a major disturbance from the crowd’s end when Djokovic took the court.
Tennis Australia came up with a strict warning for fans that being disrespectful towards Djokovic might force them to leave the stadium. While it was a sensible move to smoothly conduct the matches, a few other ATP stars were not happy with the special treatment for the Serb.
