After his breakthrough in the previous season, Taylor Fritz has quickly established himself in the top 10 rankings on the men’s tour. The American tennis star has squared off against some of the big guns in different tournaments while amassing six ATP Tour singles titles. Even though the current world No. 8 has faced numerous elite opponents, he still remembers one specific on-court encounter.

It took place in 2016 and against none other than the Swiss Maestro, Roger Federer. Fritz was a mere 18-year-old competitor in the tennis circuit then. Reminiscing about the same, the American recently opened up about how he could go back in time and play against the former tennis ace again.

Some of the top ATP superstars, including Fritz, were recently involved in an honest ‘time travel’ conversation. This was during the ongoing Shanghai Masters. They were asked, “If you could time travel to one point in history, when it would be and why?”

Most of the players, including Ben Shelton, said that they would like to go back to the period when dinosaurs were there. Fritz, on the other hand, had a totally disparate preference as he reminisced about an on-court encounter that took place during the 2016 Stuttgart Open.

He said, “I feel like I need some time to think about this one, but umm… I’d love to go back to the match where I, I’d love to go back and play Roger again. When I was 18. I lost the title to him and I’d love to redo it”

In the second-round matchup of the ATP Tour 250 event, it was the Swiss Maestro who prevailed against the unseeded American in a three-set thriller, 6-4, 5-7, 6-4. Apart from this, Fritz also locked horns with his idol on another occasion in Melbourne.

Fritz also had a Grand Slam meeting against Federer

The ATP superstars have faced each other twice, prior to the 20-time singles Grand Slam champion’s retirement in the previous season. Almost three seasons after their first meeting in Stuttgart, Fritz and Federer once again squared off against each other during the Australian Open. It was the former world No. 1 who overcame his young American rival in the third-round match of the Grand Slam event in Melbourne, 6-2, 7-5, 6-2.
