Stefanos Tsitsipas is gearing up for a thrilling showdown against Daniil Medvedev at the Shanghai Masters. A match that could add another chapter to their storied rivalry. Once marked by animosity, their relationship has turned a new leaf and evolved into one of mutual respect. As Tsitsipas puts it, casting their grievances aside, “Tennis brings peace instead of a war.”

For years, fans have witnessed the two players openly express their feelings toward each other. Their rivalry began with their first encounter at the Miami Open in 2018, nearly six years ago, which included numerous verbal exchanges. Medvedev accused Tsitsipas of calling him a “bulls*** Russian,” prompting the Greek to tell him to “shut your f*** up.” There was even an instance after Medvedev defeated Tsitsipas at the US Open later that year when he revealed that Tsitsipas had blocked him on Instagram. Yet, despite these controversies, both players have shown signs of reconciliation now.

Ahead of their showdown in Shanghai, Tsitsipas talked about his evolving relationship with Medvedev. “I always want to resolve things like that; I don’t want to leave them. It took a while, obviously a pretty long time, but it’s good to kind of get it out of the way.” The Greek star also made a point about Medvedev’s playing style, reflecting a deep appreciation for the Russian’s unique contributions to tennis. He remarked, “I think there are a lot of perhaps things that he has brought into the game that are quite unorthodox because you haven’t seen a lot of players in the past play the way that he does.”

It looks like their time at the 2024 Laver Cup proved to be pivotal for both athletes as they put their differences aside while representing Team Europe. Despite their tensions earlier, this experience allowed them to work through their rivalry and foster a sense of unity. Their collective efforts culminated in a thrilling comeback victory for Team Europe.

During an interview prior to the Laver Cup, Medvedev addressed misconceptions about their relationship, stating, “No, to be honest, I don’t think it’s that tough because we, for sure when we play sometimes in the press conference, we can say some things.” His comment underscores that while rivalries can spark heated exchanges, they do not define the players’ relationships off the court. “And we’re not best friends with them, that’s reality, but I think we all have respect for each other,” the Russian continued.

With their upcoming match in Shanghai, could this newfound respect add an intriguing layer to their rivalry?

Reflecting on his further goals, Tsitsipas stated, “What is missing is trying to get a good win under my belt, and that will redeem my efforts so far of trying to get better.” This mindset will be essential as he prepares to take on Medvedev.
