After winning his second-round match at the Australian Open, Stefanos Tsitsipas has issued some candid assertions about his Serbian colleague Novak Djokovic.  The 24-time singles Grand Slam champion has been labeled “a very selfish person” by the Greek tennis star, who recently overcame the Aussie Jordan Thompson on his home turf. Let’s find out why Tsitsipas says ‘selfish’ Djokovic needs to change his ways.

Stefanos Tsitsipas on how Novak Djokovic is a huge barrier in his path to Grand Slam glory

Following his second-round victory at Melbourne Park, the current world No. 7 player was asked how he could get over the hump and win a Grand Slam title. It was the American tennis legend John McEnroe who asked Tsitsipas, “You’ve reached 2 Slam finals. What’s it gonna take to get over the hump?”

In his honest response, the Greek said, “Numbers don’t lie. Novak has won here 12 times. He’s a very selfish person. I think he just needs to wake up one day & get less selfish. Sharing is caring more type of vibe. There are 2 scenarios. Someone needs to beat Novak that’s not me. Or it has to be me. We’ll find a way.”

Tsitsipas deems the Serbian tennis great a major reason behind his lack of Grand Slam titles on the tour. In their past meetings at the Grand Slam tournaments, the former world No. 3 player has never managed to overcome the ‘Djoker.’

Back in 2020, the Greek tennis star, the number 5 seed, was two wins away from his first major title at the French Open. However, despite a brilliant performance, Tsitsipas failed to prevail in his thrilling five-set semifinal against Djokovic, 3-6, 2-6, 7-5, 6-4, 1-6. In the very next edition of the Rolland Garros, Tsitsipas and Djokovic once again locked horns with each other, with the Serb winning the championship match after making a remarkable comeback.
