Despite experiencing a tough season and an early exit in the French Open, Rafael Nadal’s legacy continues to shine brightly. In a world where parents often push their children to replicate their own athletic achievements, it’s truly refreshing to see someone advocating for their kids to emulate the legacy of a champion like Rafael Nadal. Andy Roddick, the former American tennis star, expressed a similar desire for his children.

During the latest episode of Served with Roddick, the former tennis star discussed a wide range of topics concerning the ongoing French Open. Joining him was sports journalist Jon Wertheim. The duo deliberated on issues such as the World No. 4 Elena Rybakina’s controversial press conference, weather delays, and Rafael Nadal’s unexpected first-round loss to Alexander Zverev.

While in the discussion, Roddick acknowledged the remarkable legacy that Rafael Nadal has built. Expressing his admiration, Roddick shared his wish for his children to grow up emulating Nadal’s exemplary behavior, especially his conduct in the locker room. “I want my children to grow up and act like Rafa Nadal has since I’ve seen him in locker rooms. And I think that’s the nicest thing you can say as a parent about someone else,” Roddick admitted.

Surprisingly, this isn’t the first time Andy Roddick has lauded Nadal’s behavior both on and off the court. In an earlier episode of Served, he had highlighted Nadal’s humility:

Adding to his praise, Roddick highlighted how several top players came to watch Nadal play in the first round of Roland Garros. He mentioned that the presence of players like Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz in the audience is a testament to the respect and admiration that Nadal has garnered throughout his career.

Well, Rafael Nadal isn’t the only player Andy Roddick looks up to as a role model for his children.

Andy Roddick once expressed a desire for his children to emulate Roger Federer

Andy Roddick has always been seen praising legends like Nadal. He has shared several locker room anecdotes about Rafa and Novak Djokovic. However, the ‘King of Clay’ is not the only player Roddick admires as a role model for his children.

In 2021, Roddick expressed his hope that his son, Hank, could carry himself like the Swiss maestro, Roger Federer. Speaking to the Tennis Channel, he said, “I hope my son, if he has a hundredth of the success Roger has had even one day of his life, is as gracious as Roger is.” This statement came a year before Federer formally retired from the sport in 2022.

Roddick’s praise for both Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer highlights the profound impact both players have had on the sport. By wishing his children to emulate the Spaniard, Roddick highlights the Spanish champion’s exemplary character both on and off the court, setting a high standard for future generations.
