Frances Tiafoe, the American tennis player, reached his best career ranking of 11 in April 2023. It won’t be an overstatement to say that Tiafoe has led a highly dramatic life. From being born into an impoverished family to emerging as one of America’s best tennis players, he has seen it all. Unsurprisingly, he is heavily inspired by his parents, who also led a tough life. His father, Constant Tiafoe, was entrapped in a diamond mine before eventually escaping in 1988. His mother earned a visa and a green card in a lottery and luckily came to the USA in 1996. However, Frances is not the only tennis player in his family. His twin brother, Franklin Tiafoe, also started learning tennis beside his brother. Franklin aims to play at the same level as his brother one day.

Meet Frances Tiafoe’s twin Franklin, who also played tennis

Like his brother, Franklin Tiafoe is also a tennis player. Maryland’s DeMatha High School was Franklin’s alma mater. He spent one year playing college level tennis at Salisbury University. Franklin worked as a volunteer coach for the Howard University Tennis programme in 2021 and still works there. He played for Salisbury University. He later made the decision to begin coaching and further his own professional growth.

Franklin is determined to establish a career on his own and not simply be recognized as the brother of Frances Tiafoe. So far, he has participated in a few ITF tournaments. Frances Sr., their father, frequently took them to the Junior Tennis Champions Center when they were kids. Franklin and Frances would help out by watering the clay courts, picking up the balls, and removing the garbage. The boys were eager to grab a racquet and play a game of tennis every chance they got.

Tiafoe’s brother’s tennis journey so far and what he does now?

Franklin’s journey has been quite long, to put it mildly. Franklin claimed that Frances had immense focus and he could easily ignore any distractions. Franklin, unfortunately, was on the opposite side of the spectrum. Being the wild boy that he was, he found himself in trouble frequently. Frances outperformed Franklin on the court when the boys were around 11 years old, earning a spot in the tennis center’s homeschooling programme.

Franklin never had a regular relationship with any coach. He would work out on his own instead. However, Franklin developed greatly while playing tennis at DeMatha. Even though he was the best player on the team, he had to pay close attention to his academics to remain eligible to compete. Regardless, Franklin continued to play with a grudge because he was continually compared to his sibling.

He received an offer to play Division I tennis at the University of Maryland during his junior year. Unfortunately, the Maryland University decided to cut their tennis team, leaving Franklin lost. Franklin faced more trials during the following semester due to low grades, which made him ineligible to play. He returned to the JTCC and continued learning with Downing and working out primarily on his own at the JTCC.

When his parents sent him to Orlando to practice at the USTA National Campus, the national headquarters of American tennis, his aspirations took a significant upward turn. His goal now? “Hustle and be the best I can be, and motivate the young ones coming up.”

How Franklin supports his twin Frances Tiafoe in his growing tennis career

Even though Franklin has had a rough time compared to his brother, he is at the forefront supporting Frances. “We’re really good friends. He’s really supportive of me and I give him advice when I can on his tennis. He pushes me, and I push him. He keeps me grounded, he keeps me humble and he keeps me focused,” Frances told The Washington Post about his brother.

Franklin has faced many problems in his career till now. However, he is advancing at his own pace and still aims to compete in the ATP Tour one day. The Tiafoe brothers have been through many trials in their childhood and will always have each other’s backs.
