You need a win to cancel out a failure. The world’s No. 25, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, faced a major disappointment at the China Open. However, on the flip side, he successfully finished the journey of the Great Wall of China. These two things might seem distant from each other at first glance. However, there’s a lot more to this than what meets the eye.
After losing to Alexander Zverev in the round of 16, Fokina had some time before his next tournament. Leave it to an athlete to find a leisure activity that’s fun and involves training. Fokina came up with the idea of walking through the Great Wall of China and even getting to the end!

A special benefit of being an athlete is the opportunity to travel after, of course, fame and money. However, going around and doing what you love is a major plus point in any context. With these tours, players often find themselves at popular tourist spots when free. That is exactly what the 24-year-old Spanish star did.

“After suitable rest we explore the Great Wall of China.” Fokina, with this caption, let everyone know that this wasn’t an impromptu trip. Rather, he planned this thoroughly, as per his schedule. The Spaniard wasn’t alone on this journey around the wall. He was accompanied by his girlfriend, Paloma Amatiste. He posted several pictures of his travel on Instagram.
Not to pry, but it seems like Fokina going on this trek around the wall was more than mere amusement. Davidovich’s recent loss at the China Open may have something to do with this adventure. Although, he is also up for a match at the Shanghai Masters.
A look back to Fokina’s loss at the China Open
The 24-year-old was coming up pretty well in the beginning. He was thrashing his opponents with embarrassing scores. However, Fokina fell victim to his own spell. When the Spaniard faced Zverev, his first set was amazingly good. It must have filled him with confidence up to a certain level. Although, nothing could have prepared him for what was coming next.

The set of 7⁷-6⁴ was followed by an unbelievable 2-6 and 1-6. As embarrassing as it was, Fokina didn’t even get a chance to fight back. Alexander Zverev dominated that match in every way possible. There is no way either of them will ever forget this match, yet for completely different reasons.
Fokina did what he could, but ultimately it was Zverev’s time to shine. Davidovich made a good decision to clear his mind with this trek. Even if it doesn’t practically give him an edge in his matches, the journey is meant to recharge his soul with zest.
