It has been an eventful tournament so far in Flushing Meadows. This year’s US Open has seen some untoward incidents like the tennis balls used at the tournament sparking controversy, player injuries, and unfavorable conditions making it difficult for the players. Additionally, the tournament has also seen massive upsets as the likes of Iga Swiatek and Casper Ruud have already exited the tournament. Recently, another major controversy erupted before Novak Djokovic and Taylor Fritz’s match.

The two are currently battling it out for a place in the US Open semifinals. Let’s look at the goof-up that involved an ESPN commentator.

Commentator mixes up Taylor Fritz and Taylor Swift

As Coco Gauff’s match was about to get over, ESPN commentator Mary Carillo went on to announce the following match between Djokovic and Fritz. However, a major blunder ensued when she called Taylor Fritz as Taylor Swift. The video of the goof-up soon went viral on social media and invited reactions from thousands of fans.

One of the fans said, “She really said Swift – I thought initially I did not hear well.”

Further, some fans had hilarious reactions to this mistake. One of the Twitter users revealed, “Taylor Swift entering Arthur Ashe.”

Another fan mentioned, “she would DESTROY djokovic.”

Subsequently, one fan made a mockery of the blunder, saying, “its official.. the handsome lad taylor swift.”

One of the fans sided with the singer, saying, “Is there anything Taylor Swift can’t do?”

Meanwhile, the match between Djokovic and Fritz has begun with the Serb making a dominant start to the quarterfinal clash. He has won the first set 6-1 and is leading in the second set 4-2. While the goof-up was not enough to put off Fritz, his compatriot, Coco Gauff, ditched him for Djokovic.

Gauff honored Novak Djokovic

In the first match today on Arthur Ashe, Gauff defeated Jelena Ostapenko to enter the semifinals. After her match, she revealed a special note for the 23-time Grand Slam champion, Djokovic.

She said, “I’ll take the mic for this one. Coming up next is the #1 player in the world at the end of this tournament. 23 Slams… NOVAK DJOKOVIC!”

With the quarterfinal appearance, Djokovic will move atop the ATP rankings chart in the first spot. It has been a glorious season for the Serb and he’ll hope to finish it off on a high.
