What an emotional year it is turning out to be for tennis fans. The month of September has seen two of the greatest stars of the game, Serena Williams and Roger Federer bid goodbye to the sport. Earlier this month, the American legend called time on her successful career after a third-round defeat at the US Open. Today, Federer made an emotional exit after playing his last match at the Laver Cup.

The 20-time Grand Slam champion had an emotional speech after playing his final match. He thanked his family and friends for making a positive impact on his career. Chiefly, he had special words for his wife Mirka, who had sacrificed her career for him.
Roger Federer thanks his wife Mirka
During the on-court interview after playing his last match, the Swiss maestro broke down as he reminisced about Mirka’s impact on his career. As Federer thanked Mirka, she too broke down in tears.
Federer said, “She could have stopped me long, long time ago. But she didn’t.”?Further, he went on to add, “She kept me going and allowed me to continue to play, so that’s amazing. Thank you.”?
Subsequently, thanking his parents, Federer said, “I find it always funny we always blame my mom for everything. Without her, I wouldn’t be here of course. So thanks to my parents. You’ve been amazing. Thank you. Too many people to thank. It’s just been incredible. Fantastic night. Thank you, everybody.”?

Federer loses his last match
Partnering with Rafael Nadal, Federer tasted defeat in the final match of his professional tennis career. Team World’s Jack Sock and Frances Tiafoe defeated Roger Federer and Nadal 4-6, 7-6 (2), 11-9 to level the 2022 Laver Cup 2-2.
