Snacking while watching a game is pretty much a universal experience. Well, maybe, not for everyone and especially not when you get called out for it in front of the camera. Tennis often has its moments of absolute laughs. Olympic gold medalist Andrey Rublev made a fan go through this issue first-hand in his doubles match at the Shanghai Masters as his high-octane clash took an unexpected turn.

Everyone knows how strongly players feel about getting distracted by fans. Rublev was paired with Karen Khachanov against India’s Rohan Bopanna and the 9-time ATP doubles winner Matthew Ebden. With the doubles match heating up, the Russian was in no way ready for what was coming his way next.

Watching a sport without drinks and snacks? That sounds like a boring couple of hours, no matter how interesting the match might be. A fan, with a similar thought, was enjoying his food at the match in Shanghai. However, with tennis stadiums being the deathly quiet that they can be on certain occasions, that light munching turned out to be grounds for a hilarious call-out.

The clip on Twitter doing the rounds on Twitter captured Rublev’s genuine emotions in a bizarre moment. He looks genuinely stunned at this unbelievable sound, which in the silence of the court, sounded like concrete crunching under one’s shoe. Andrey gestured to the spectator to stop. However, the fan, being hungry, kept on with his business. Eventually, even the umpire had to intervene to finally take care of the situation, saying, “Can you please stop eating?”.

The fan had little to go by for holding up the players, and soon the crunching noises elapsed into peace. But the same couldn’t be said for Rublev’s state of affairs on the court. Will Rublev blame this fan for his lapsed focus and the results of this match?

How did the match turn out?

In retrospect, it seems like Rublev was right to react the way he did, as he was losing focus. After winning the first set, he and Khachanov couldn’t take control in the upcoming sets. Finally, Khachanov and Rublev lost the match to veterans Ebden and Bopanna in the close encounter.

On the other hand, Bopanna’s partnership with Ebden was smoother than butter. The duo scored 4-6, 6-3, and 10-8 as they qualified for the quarter-finals at the Shanghai Open. With their current run in mind, their match against Jean-Julien Rojer and Marcelo Arevalo is slated to be an interesting one.
