Is the US Open's brutal heat a true test of endurance or just plain dangerous?

The US Open is off to a good start but the conditions might bring out the worst for some players. Played as the last grand slam of the season, each player is equally excited and thrilled to give their everything to make sure that they get their hands on the title. However, the conditions in New York are not favoring many at this moment, as Tomas Martin Etcheverry suffered in the humidity.

The Argentinean star, who played fellow countryman Francisco Cerundolo in the second round of US Open could not withstand the extreme heat of the place. In a match that went to thrilling 5 sets, he was leading the 5th set with the scoreline of 4-1 when his body couldn’t resist anymore and he puked on the courts.

Interestingly, the temperature there in New York is above 30 degrees and the humidity levels are also at 50%. With conditions like these, it gets extremely tough for players to play and eventually Etcheverry became the victim of the heat. However, amidst the difficult conditions, he managed to keep his head up and eventually came out on top. The final scoreline of the match ended 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 in his favor.

With the win, he has now secured his seat into the third round of the event and will now be facing Alexander Zverev. But before that, he would be looking to get apt rest and make sure that he is ready for a fight against his tough opponent. Aside from Etcheverry, Novak Djokovic also suffered under the heat and humidity, as he had to take medical timeout during his match against Laslo Djere.

The conditions were very difficult, honestly,” said Etcheverry, after his victory. He further claimed, “It’s dangerous not only for the players, but also for the public.” Madison Keys also chimed in about the weather conditions as she said, “I just wanted to get on and get off.” Her compatriot, Frances Tiafoe, also joined and said, “I’m sweating crazy. What was it, 95 degrees outside? Today was crazy,” after his R2 clash.

Thus, Tomas Martin Etcheverry became a victim of extreme weather conditions. While he managed to secure a win, it came up with some big cost. Talking about the same, it was Coco Gauff‘s head coach who echoed the same sentiments and made his thoughts clear on what was going to be pretty challenging day.
