Is Roger Federer's style game slipping, or is Roddick just being cheeky as usual?

Roger Federer, a trendsetter one might say, getting trolled for his fashion sense? That makes no sense. At least at first, it doesn’t. Especially when comments on his dressing aesthetic come from a notable tennis personality who dueled with the Swiss Maestro multiple times on the Tour. Known for his charisma, Federer has blessed the sport with his return, not as a player, but as a spectator. While marking his attendance at the Laver Cup, he is turning heads and his presence also elicited a hilarious reaction from Andy Roddick.

The 20-time Grand Slam champion has been making rounds in Berlin. While Team Europe’s preparations intrigued him, Federer also furnished himself by greeting the sport’s top competitors. Notably, the veteran finally met Carlos Alcaraz, after expressing his willingness to apologize to the young Spaniard for snubbing him at Wimbledon in 2019. After witnessing Federer chat with Team Europe, Roddick was quick to note an unsettling feature of Fed.

As Federer walked the event’s backstage, excitement ran on all fronts for the retired Swiss pro. Speaking on the ‘Tennis Channel’s’ live telecast, Roddick took an unconventional route to address his attendance. He was quick to highlight the former World No. 1’s wardrobe malfunction, hilariously stating how he had lost touch with his dressing aesthetic since his retirement. “It’s just sad to see someone who’s let himself go like Roger has. Look at this, completely uncapped t-shirt, the guy doesn’t even want a collar anymore. It’s just sad to see,” Roddick said.

For those unaware, Federer has been locked in with his clothing sponsor ‘Uniqlo’ for quite some time. He frequently tours with their outfit, exploring and promoting the brand’s latest drops and ventures.

Coming back to Roddick though, he made that comment in jest, but during his playing days, Federer time and again proved to be his kryptonite. Roddick’s aim for enriching his resume bore no fruition due to the former World No. 1. Despite reaching the finals of five Grand Slam events, Roddick lost four to Federer. His sole Slam victory came at the 2003 US Open, where he downed Juan Carlos Ferrero to lift the Flushing Meadows crown.

Swiss superstar Roger Federer can’t sideline his love for the sport. That’s certain, even retirement couldn’t take that away from him. Two years after hanging his racquet, the former World No. 1 wants a chunk out of his once impressive gameplay. Only this time, his practice sessions take place with family members, who might not be able to present a noteworthy challenge to him.

Speaking at the Laver Cup, Federer highlighted that though he’s happy not playing anymore, his recent on-court adventures were wonderful. “I’ve been playing a lot this summer, it’s been wonderful. Actually been back on the court with my kids, my friends, the weather has been good. It’s easier to play in the summer so wonderful to play. And [the Laver Cup practice] is even on film so I can keep that,” Federer said.

Marking a return to the professional circuit might be a leap for Federer, but, the Swiss Maestro can indulge in exhibition events. Who knows, if someday he decides to clash with Roddick, showcasing their once-hyped rivalry to fans.
