World No.48 Federico Delbonis won a spectacular match against World No.51 Benoit Paire in the quarters of the Hamburg Open 2021. The Argentine fought a tough battle and defeated him in three sets. The final scoreline of the match was 4-6, 7(11)-6(9), 6-4.
Benoit Paire played really well at the Hamburg 2021 and won two matches there. However, he just choked and lost in the quarter-finals even after earning four-match points during the match.

Set-1: Benoit Paire takes the early lead
Paire got off to a great start as he broke in the very first game of the match. He won his first service game as well and thus, established a 2-0 lead over Delbonis. Even though the Argentine won three break-points in the fifth game, he failed to capitalize on them and lost the game. Paire was leading 3-2 at this moment.

He continued his momentum and didn’t allow his opponent to break. The one who served continued to win and therefore, the scoreline soon reached 5-4.

Serving for the set, Paire son four straight points and thus, won the first set 6-4 in 39 minutes.

Set-2: Federico Delbonis wins a close tie-breaker
Serving first again in the second set, Delbonis didn’t let Paire dominate right from the beginning and took a 1-0 lead. However, Paire equalized the scoreline at 1-1 in the very next game.

It was Paire again who broke first in the second set. The World No.51 player did so in the fifth game and widened the margin to 4-2 at the end of the sixth game.
Delbonis was surely under immense pressure at this time. He fought back hard and managed to break back and thus, brought the scoreline back to 4-4 at the end of the 8th game. Both of them won their service games following this and the scoreline reached 5-5.
Interestingly, Paire saved two set-points in the 12th game and took the set into a tie-breaker. He played quite well in the tie-breaker too but this time, Delbonis saved four match-points and won the 20-point tie-breaker 11-9.
Set-3: Benoit Paire bites the dust
Even though Paire enjoyed an ideal start and won the first game, Delbonis won the next three games after breaking in the third game. Therefore, he established a 3-1 lead over the Frenchman.

However, Paire broke back in the sixth game to equalize the scoreline and then won the following game as well and was now leading 4-4 at the end of the 8th game.

Stunningly, Delbonis broke for the second time in the ninth game and was just one game away from victory. Serving for the set, he didn’t make any mistake and conquered the match set, and thus won the match.
