Former world No. 1 and German tennis legend Boris Becker is currently one of the leading and one of the most credible voices of the tennis world. Often sharing titillating opinions, he has moved to commentating and punditry and regularly features on Eurosports to share his insights. However, this time he agrees with the Swiss maestro, Roger Federer, about the future of the sport.
The era of the Big 3 is coming to a close, with tennis now in the hands of young upstarts. And Becker is backing Federer’s opinion about not putting pressure on Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner with huge comparisons to previous legends.

Taking to the social media platform X, Becker reshared a post from the official handle of The Tennis Letter and captioned it “Word.” The post quoted Federer from his GQ interview last month, where he suggested not putting pressure on Alcaraz and Sinner by setting sky-high expectations and gave fans and analysts a reality check.

“I don’t like to put the pressure on these players because honestly aiming for 20 [major victories] was not something I did, Rafa did, or Novak did. Of course, you have the players that you think are going to win multiple Slams,” said Federer, pointing out the fact that aiming to win a record number of titles or pursuing such goals so early on isn’t healthy.
The Swiss mentioned that players like Alcaraz and Sinner have already started thinking of themselves as the superstars of tennis due to the urgent nature of the fans’ and tennis media’s curiosity regarding their potential. He believes at such a nascent stage there are a lot of players with great potential who are trying to figure out their playing style and how to beat the players at the top.
It’s surprising to see Becker agreeing with the Swiss maestro as the German has made some rather distasteful allegations about Federer in his memoir, Boris Becker’s Wimbledon: My Life And Career At The All England Club.

Speaking about Federer in his memoir, Becker stated that the Swiss became one of the highest-paid athletes of all time because of a curated ‘image’ and by hiding his true feelings.
“The reason Roger is one of the highest-paid athletes of all time is because he’s liked by everybody. But think about this – you can’t possibly be liked by everybody,” Becker wrote. “He makes good money out of his image, but would he make less if we saw a bit more of his true feelings?”
A stumped Federer told USA Today that he found the comments “odd” as they both used to get along nicely. He even considered the German his “hero” and was shocked. He mentions that he doesn’t “try to please everyone.”

Interestingly, Federer even tried to imply that Becker is trying to take advantage of the Swiss’s popularity by making such comments to sell more books!
