Even in the twilight of his illustrious journey, Roger Federer was making a lot of strides on the men’s tour. Back in 2018, the Swiss Maestro was 36 and was sitting at the top of the ATP rankings owing to his stellar season. It further made Federer the oldest tennis player holding the number 1 ranking during the period 1973–2023 on the men’s circuit.

The remarkable stat was recently brought to light by a tennis fan page on Twitter, which also highlighted how Novak Djokovic is now close to breaking this record. “Oldest tennis players at No.1 in the ATP Rankings (1973-2023/Men’s Singles): 🇨🇭 Roger Federer | 36y 10m, 2018, 🇷🇸 Novak Djokovic | 36y 6m, 2023 📍 Will the tennis player from Belgrade remain at the top of the world rankings in May 2024 and surpass the Swiss record?”

Notably, the Serbian tennis superstar is now just a few months away from pulling off this ‘number 1’ feat, as he might surpass Federer. Djokovic, who concluded this season at the number one spot for the 400th week, is now being hailed by a prominent figure in the tennis community.
