The 2024 tennis season is complete. As the final events of the year conclude, it’s time for the statistics of overall performance to be judged. For the American star Taylor Fritz, it was a fairly successful season. While he started his season slow, he ultimately clinched two titles at Del Ray Beach and Eastbourne and made it to the summit clash of the US Open and ATP Finals, eventually ending the year as No.4 on the ATP rankings. Things are looking up for Fritz even though he’s got a long way to go. And, Perhaps he has already found his inspiration for the next season.

Fritz played 76 matches this year. With a 53-23 Win-loss rate, which is applaudable considering the hectic tour schedule. His toughest rival this year was World No. 1 Jannik Sinner. The two faced off three times, with Sinner winning each encounter. Sinner triumphed at the US Open, the ATP Finals first round, and the championship match. Sinner enjoyed an exceptional season, clinching eight titles, including two Grand Slams—the US Open and the Australian Open—with a remarkable win-loss record of 73-6 over 79 matches.

Earlier today, Tennis TV shared a comparison of Sinner’s achievement on X. Comparing it to the Big Three. In that, Roger Federer‘s incredible feat of playing 97 matches in a single year back in 2006 stood out the most. Fritz was gobsmacked at this record and responded to the tweet. He wrote, “I can’t begin to tell you how INSANE playing 97 matches in one year is (Roger 2006). Especially back when Masters finals were 3/5 sets as well.” This comparison highlights the grueling nature of the tour and the dedication required to compete at such high levels.

The 2024 ATP tour featured 63 tournaments across 29 countries, demanding players to participate in key events to maintain their rankings. This includes eight mandatory Masters 1,000 tournaments and four Grand Slams. During this tour, many players withdrew from events and matches citing fatigue and injury. Some like Sinner may have persevered, but a lot of players sought some time off. Now, to think that Federer played nearly 100 matches in 2006? That perhaps comes from being built differently. Only Federer has that quality.

Even if Fritz hasn’t reached that level yet, he seems to be getting there. He played only three matches short of Sinner this season, even though there was a huge difference between the two in terms of W/L ratio. Despite a dip in performance after his loss to Sinner at the US Open, facing early exits at the Japan Open and Paris Masters, Fritz rebounded strongly at the ATP Finals.

He first defeated Daniil Medvedev and Alex de Minaur in the group stage. Then ended Alexander Zverev’s eight-match winning streak in the semi-finals by 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(3). Looking ahead to next season, Fritz appears motivated. Serena Williams’ ex-coach reckons that Fritz’s success may stem from both his evolving technique and a strong support system.

Rennae Stubbs praises Fritz for his performance at the 2024 ATP Final

On November 26, Rennae Stubbs shared her thoughts on Taylor Fritz’s journey to the ATP Finals, where he faced off against Jannik Sinner in the final match. Although Fritz didn’t claim the title, reaching that stage was a significant accomplishment. Stubbs highlighted Fritz’s passion for improvement, saying, “I think we’ll see what happens with Taylor next year because I think you got a taste for it.”

She also reflected on Fritz’s visible frustration after losing to Sinner in the US Open final, remarking, “That’s good.” Stubbs believes such emotions can serve as motivation for future success. Despite falling short at the ATP Finals, Fritz showcased his talent by defeating Alexander Zverev, who was a favorite at the event. This victory was pivotal in solidifying Fritz’s current ranking. “He’s making slow, incremental improvements, yeah, you know. And so that’s huge,” Stubbs noted, emphasizing his steady progress.

Fritz’s growth is further fueled by the healthy competition with his fellow players. Stubbs pointed out that competitors like Ben Shelton and Frances Tiafoe push him to elevate his game: “I think all the guys behind him… have pushed him to be better because I think he has that. He has that edge,” Stubbs added.

Fritz’s parents Guy Henry Fritz and Kathy May were both professionals. Since a young age, Fritz has had a strong foundation and a desire for greatness. Stubbs remarked, “He comes from a very successful tennis family, so he has the mindset of wanting to be better.” Now with his sights firmly set on winning Grand Slams, Taylor Fritz is poised for an exciting 2025 season. Will he snag a few titles next season? Only time will tell!
