Can Tsitsipas ever surpass his idol Federer, or is he forever in his shadow?

Imagine stepping on the tennis courts and finding legendary Roger Federer right across from you. Isn’t that something every aspiring tennis player would dream of? That was exactly Stefanos Tsitsipas dream growing, and he was fortunate enough to live his dream. The Greek star has faced the Swiss legend not once but on multiple occasions. For Tsitsipas, every occasion meant something special.

All set to play the Swiss Indoors, Stefanos sat down for an interview with the Tennis Channel where he was asked about his memories of playing against Federer. Reflecting on the special moments, Tsitsipas shared his admiration for Federer and how surreal it felt to compete against him. “Those were my favourite matches purely because I never imagined myself stepping on the court playing against them,” Tsitsipas revealed.

He described each match as a “majestic moment,” highlighting the significance of being on the other side of the net from a legend like Federer. Tsitsipas recalled the experience, “It was mesmerizing to get to face him on the other side of the court and to witness his excellency and the way he played the game.”

Tsitsipas has played against Federer four times with H2H being in his favor. However, winning or losing took the back seat, the Greek star just cherished every minute of his contests with Federer. “I enjoyed it even though I got beaten multiple times,” the player admitted.

What makes their journey so special is the fact that they have faced each other 5 times and all these encounters came in the year 2019. Federer won the 2019 Dubai final and the Basel semifinal, whereas Tsitsipas took important victories at the 2019 Australian Open, ATP Masters 1000 Rome, and Nitto ATP Finals. Each match fanned the sense of  respect and admiration Tsitsipas had for Federer. Despite having played several matches against Federer, Tsitsipas doesn’t seem to be done. Not long ago, the player said he would love to play Federer one more time.

Not many know that the two have also played on the same team as well at the Laver Cup. Right after the match, Stefanos had a special request for the legend. “It would mean the world to me if I could have one of your racquets,” said Tsitsipas to Federer. “I’ve been following you since I was three years old. If I could have a racquet to frame and put in my house, to share that with you is extremely special to me. I hope you don’t mind giving me that piece of your identity.”

Doesn’t that sum it all? We hope Stefanos gets to play Federer one more time. Who do you think would win this time?
