The country’s primary education completion rate is alarmingly low, with approximately one-third of children unable to complete the education cycle. Moreover, access to secondary and tertiary education remains limited, exacerbating the educational disparities. The prevalence of HIV/AIDS further complicates the educational landscape, necessitating specific planning and support. In response to these challenges, the Roger Federer Foundation launched its School Readiness Initiative in Lesotho in June 2020. The initiative is scheduled to continue until December 2025. It aims to reach at least 60,000 children in 800 institutions offering reception classes.
It encompasses various interventions, including raising awareness among key stakeholders, such as the national government and local communities. The initiative also prioritizes the capacity-building of reception class teachers to ensure the delivery of high-quality early learning. At his visit to Lesotho, Federer has immersed himself in the lives of the children his foundation aims to support. Federer’s presence and involvement serve as a source of inspiration and motivation for the children. He has encouraged them to pursue their dreams despite the challenges they face.

His journey to Lesotho is not only an act of humanitarianism, but also a way to connect with his heritage and honor his mother’s upbringing. Beyond the immediate impact of his presence, Federer’s foundation is working diligently to create sustainable change. By focusing on early childhood education and providing children with a solid foundation, the initiative aims to break the cycle of poverty and improve educational outcomes in Lesotho. The training provided to teachers, parents, and communities equips them with the necessary tools and knowledge to support children’s learning and development.
