Federer’s emotional celebration at Roland Garros 2009
Roger Federer, despite his multiple titles in other Grand Slam tournaments, had one kingdom he couldn’t conquer for the longest time—the French Open. Year after year, the Swiss legend lost to the King of Clay, Rafael Nadal in the finals, making it three years in a row, with the 2008 defeat being a particularly tough one for him.
In 2009, which counted as his fourth consecutive attempt to hit the mark, Federer finally ended the chase as he defeated Robin Soderling in straight sets 6-1, 7-6 (7-1), 6-4. The victory’s worth came out to be clearly visible to the tennis world as he sank to his knees with tears of victory streaming down his face.
