Roger Federer Falls to His Lowest ATP Ranking in Over 20 Years

We all miss the Swiss maestro in action, don’t we? Such has been the stature of Roger Federer, who has graced the sport for around 25 years now. His attacking game and audacious shot-making are like none other. Additionally, his single-handed backhands are a treat to watch.

Although he has achieved everything he could in tennis, his return is much anticipated by fans across the globe. Federer is sidelined from the tour since playing at The Championships, Wimbledon last season. After his quarterfinal defeat against Hubert Hurkacz in the tournament, Federer suffered a knee injury, which has also troubled him in the past.

It has been exactly nine months since we last saw Federer play. Recently, he suffered a massive blow due to his lengthy injury lay-off.

Roger Federer suffers a huge drop in his ATP ranking

The 40-year-old has dropped to the 44th position in the ATP rankings, which is his lowest ranking since 12th June 2000.

The Swiss maestro dropped 18 places to be stationed at 44th place when the latest rankings were updated this week after the Miami Open. Elsewhere, Miami Open champion, Carlos Alcaraz, rose five places to move to the 11th spot. Meanwhile, Cameron Norrie entered the top-10 for the first time after a consistent start to this season.

Federer had to undergo a third surgery on his right knee last year to maintain any hope of a comeback. It has been a torrid time for Federer, who has been in the process of rehabilitation lately. Last season too, was an on and off one for him. He had missed the early part of the 2021 season, including the Australian Open. Subsequently, he played in five tournaments before being sidelined again.

Earlier this year, Federer had provided glimpses of hope regarding his comeback on the tour. The Swiss maestro aims to make a comeback at the Laver Cup. The tournament will take place from September 23-25, 2022 in London. It will see long-time on-court rivals, Federer and Nadal, turn into teammates.
