Roger Federer may have been a tennis player but he never misses a chance to hit the ball out of the park when it comes to impressing fans. TV personality Hannah Berner, tennis player turned comedian, almost burst into tears when she met her idol. For someone who left tennis to pursue a career in the arts because of various “sign(s) from the world”, meeting the 20x Grand Slam champ was a dream come true.

In an interview with Tennis Channel, the 32-year-old discussed her love for legendary players like Rafael Nadal, thinking about whom made her emotional. But it was Federer who affected her the most. Berner came face to face with the Swiss tennis legend last year during the US Open and told Tennis Channel, “I met Federer once last year at a U.S. Open event. I meet a lot of Hollywood-type people and well, I cried when I met Federer.”

Further, she also stressed how everyone’s attention was drawn to her because of uncontrollable emotions, “Everyone’s like, are you okay? And I’m like, you don’t understand. He is the greatest. That man and his skinny left arm, there were so many things.”

When shown the picture that she posted from that day in 2023, Berner dwelled on the moment, “I was starting to cry, like my right eye was like quivering. He’s like an angel, just floating around, taking to us mere mortals.” Going on to discuss the impact of Serena Williams’ retirement, the TV personality stated how hard it hit her.

Having played competitive tennis throughout her life, even playing on her high school boys’ team and then joining the University of Wisconsin’s team, Hannah Berner was going to be a pro player once. But by her senior year, burnout was starting to impede her progress, and to make things worse, she was hit by a car. That, and the inevitable financial aspect of playing as a pro finally ended her tennis dreams, marking her shift to comedy. But the love of the sport never died.

Looking back to the picture she posted on Instagram at the 2023 US open, even the caption talked about how happy Berner was to meet the former world number one tennis player, “I met the goat and I didn’t play it cool.” Hannah Berner got an opportunity to meet the 20-time Grand Slam champion as a part of Federer’s ON sportswear line interview.

The app imitated Federer’s voice to provide road directions in French. “We just landed in Switzerland and the Waze GPS voice is Federer. I am on the floorrrr,” added the social media influencer. Riddle’s admiration for the Swiss tennis legend is not new, as her social media frequently talks about the legend’s popularity beyond the professional tennis scene.
