Kyrgios still hung up on Federer loss—Is he too emotional to be a true champion?

Nick Kyrgios and his antics always go hand in hand and never go out of style—at least when they work in his favor. The Australian “Bad Boy of Tennis,” despite being an inactive player for nearly two years, has maintained his relevance via social media. When not occupied with his occasional commentating gig, Kyrgios shares his thoughts on the latest happenings in the sport. However, this time, the Aussie lamented over a tough loss he endured nearly seven years ago to Roger Federer.

The Aussie most recently marked his attendance at the Ultimate Tennis Showdown (UTS) in New York at Forest Hills Stadium. While his off-court endeavors have superseded his time spent on the Tour, Kyrgios hasn’t played on the circuit since partnering with Thanasi Kokkinakis at the season-ending ATP Finals in November 2022, aside from his brief one-match appearance in Stuttgart, Germany, in June 2023. Marred by wrist and knee injuries, months of rehabbing, and undergoing surgeries to remedy his physical limitations, Kyrgios’ official return to the circuit seems uncertain. Amid all this, the Aussie has seemingly not forgotten about his heartbreaking moment at the 2017 Laver Cup in Prague.

The annual group event, co-founded by Roger Federer and his agent Tony Godsick, showcased its stellar aura for the first time in 2017. Gaining much traction amongst fans, the tournament’s final match between Team World and Team Europe set the stage for the Federer-Kyrgios clash. What came next was a rare sighting and, in turn, an impressive showdown between the duo.

Determined to lift the trophy, both players went full throttle. Producing straight nitro, Kyrgios clinched the first set, but the Swiss wasn’t done just yet. The former World No. 1 bounced back by closely edging out the Aussie in the second set, forcing a decider. Despite maintaining his resilience, Kyrgios felt the wrath of the Swiss Maestro’s racket when he narrowly missed his mark and lost the contest in a three-set thriller, 4-6, 7-6(6), 11-9. Recalling the tough loss, Kyrgios took to his Instagram to post a reel with highlights of the match. Furthermore, the 2022 Wimbledon finalist also captioned the post, saying Federer “could have given me this one”.

He said, “When you come back from injury like this, you learn a lot about yourself. I wouldn’t be able to get through this if I wasn’t super patient. I still have heavy expectations of myself (post-injury). I want to get back out there and compete for titles and win big matches… Especially with my wrist… I think I’ve come back pretty well.”

After commentating for ESPN at the US Open, Kyrgios has quietly stepped away from the sport. While some speculate that the Aussie is recovering and preparing for his comeback, others believe that his career might be over. On that note, what do you make of his future in the sport?
