The Wimbledon Championships happen to be tennis’ most prestigious tournament. However, the fact that the tournament takes place in Wimbledon, London always makes it susceptible to delays enforced by spells of rain. The latest Wimbledon clash to feel the effects of a sudden downpour features Novak Djokovic, who is aiming for his 24th singles Grand Slam title. Djokovic comfortably dominated Argentine Pedro Cachin in the first-round contest’s opening set. However, no sooner had the set come to its conclusion, the heavens opened up.

Unsurprisingly, the match was suspended as a result of the rain, with the Center Court crowd looking dejected. However, Novak Djokovic, who continues to entertain not only through his tennis but also his on-court antics from time to time, stepped up to put some smiles on the faces of those in attendance.

This isn’t the first-time rain has interfered with a match at the Wimbledon Championships. However, the fact that the Center Court crowd was eagerly looking forward to reigning champion Djokovic’s tennis heroics made this instance of rain enforced delay even worse.

Fortunately for the crowd, Djokovic’s turned his entertainer mode on, and the results were hilarious. As the crowd looked on for Center Court to dry quickly so Djokovic and Cachin could commence their battle, the Serbian legend made his sensational entry.

Djokovic, armed with a towel in his hand, made his way into the court and started wiping the surface clean. The Wimbledon crowd turned out to be incredibly appreciative of Djokovic’s efforts to keep the smiles intact. What’s more? Djokovic even urged the crowd on as he was desperate for play to restart. “Blow… we need everybody to help!”, said Djokovic to an amused audience. Thankfully, play commenced in a matter of minutes due to the court staff’s prompt and efficient use of blowers.

Wimbledon wouldn’t want a repeat of 2021

Suspension of a match is one thing. What really hurts is if a match, especially one that features a high-profile name, gets scrapped altogether. This is something that Wimbledon suffered in 2021.

At the time, multiple matches suffered due to the rains. Some of the biggest names to be affected by the match cancellations included Venus Williams, Denis Shapovalov, and Karolina Pliskova. Subsequently, the tournament rescheduled all the cancelled matches. Let’s hope this particular piece of history doesn’t recur this year and stays put in the past.
