“His legacy is going to be eternal,” said Carlos Alcaraz, with sheer confidence about Rafael Nadal‘s unmatched legacy in the sporting world. The Spaniard who has pushed the boundaries of sportsmanship has ultimately bid farewell to tennis. While almost every tennis star stepped forward to celebrate Rafa’s incredible career, Carlos Alcaraz’s expression of appreciation and love turned out to be quite unique.

Rising tennis star Carlos Alcaraz recently shared an emotional reaction to Rafael Nadal’s retirement on Instagram. Alcaraz posted a story featuring the well-known Pablo Escobar waiting meme to show his feelings amid the legend’s retirement. However, the post didn’t show up solo as it was paired with a caption. “My life after Rafa Nadal retired,”  it said. The lighthearted yet emotional post reflects Alcaraz’s feelings about the departure of a tennis legend.

In case you didn’t know, the Pablo Escobar waiting meme has a deep presence in internet culture. It originated from the Netflix series Narcos, which portrays the life of the Colombian drug lord. They are widely known as the “Pablo Escobar waiting” or “sad Pablo Escobar” memes.

Alcaraz has openly admired Nadal throughout his career. Nadal’s retirement hit him hard, as the young player often credits Nadal as a major influence. Alcaraz had the honor of playing alongside Nadal during the Davis Cup, which marked Nadal’s final tournament. Alcaraz won his match and dedicated the victory to Nadal, saying, “I won for Rafa.”

Despite Alcaraz’s efforts, Spain lost to the Netherlands, ending Nadal’s legendary career. After the match, Alcaraz reflected on Nadal’s legacy. “I think he was one of the best ambassadors for tennis,” Alcaraz said. “His legacy will last forever. He has done so much for tennis and for sports in general. It’s almost impossible to continue the legacy he’s left, but I’ll do my best.” However, the young Spaniard isn’t the only one who’ll miss Rafa more than anything.

Rafael Nadal received an emotional on-court farewell after the Davis Cup tie. The ceremony included a heartfelt video message from his long-time rival, Novak Djokovic. Djokovic praised Nadal’s unique contributions to the sport in his adorable message. “Your tenacity, fighting spirit, and the energy you brought to the court, the power, will be studied and will be transferred to many generations that are coming up,” said Djokovic. “I have been very honoured and thrilled to be called your rival. The tennis world, and indeed the sporting world, will profoundly miss the incredible energy you brought to the game. There’s so much to celebrate and cherish around your legacy.”

The video tribute also featured messages from other tennis legends. Roger Federer, who shared some of the most iconic matches with Nadal, congratulated him on an amazing career. “Congratulations on the most incredible career,” Federer said. “It was such a privilege to play with you but especially against you. Some of my favourite memories with you are of course the 2008 Wimbledon final where you got me. I wish you all the best for what’s to come with your amazing family.” Alongside Federer, messages from Serena Williams and Andy Murray highlighted Nadal’s unmatched impact on tennis.

Andy Murray, who also retired earlier in 2024, reflected on Nadal’s passion and influence. “The passion and intensity you played with was something I think all tennis players aspire to, and what all tennis fans will remember you for,” Murray said. “It has been incredible watching you.
