Rafael Nadal‘s return to the court post-surgery has concerned his famous coach, Carlos Moya. Recently in an interview, Moya talked about his concern regarding Nadal’s return to the court. He revealed some crucial challenges that he and Nadal both have to overcome after the long pause.

Nadal’s hip surgery impacted his professional tennis career as he had to rest for five months to recover. That truly kept Nadal off track for the whole 2023. Now Moya thinks this long pause might impact Nadal’s performance when he returns for the tournaments.

Recently, Carlos Moya said, “For me, clearly the assimilation of the burdens of the parties. I think that’s my biggest fear. Rafa is going to go from training, which he is doing very well, to competing. And it is impossible to have the same conditions in training as in a match. Play the best of five sets, win, rest, return to the court two days later… That is the doubt I have right now, especially for a Grand Slam. But we have time.”

Moya’s comments revealed that he is not quite sure about Nadal’s ability to pull off prestigious tournaments like he did before. His coach specifically mentioned how his form went downwards in these crucial days of injury. Moya further added- “If the Australian Open started tomorrow, it would be a real fear. There is still a month left, a tournament before in Brisbane, demanding training… I think all of this will put him in a position to be able to endure it. But right now that’s my fear.”

Moya revealed that Nadal had to go through the surgery since he was determined to return to the court. However, the surgery was complicated to downgrade the tennis legend’s skills. Moya recalled how athletes have to retire after a point and those training days showed him that Nadal is heading that way.

He said- “ I have had them in a certain part of the process, in certain stages. I have had the feeling that it could be the end, without having the option to play again. It has been the most complicated moment I have lived with him”.
