Rafael Nadal had a complicated hip surgery that stopped him from attending prestigious tournaments in the 2023 season. Now Nadal’s coach, the famous Carlos Moya revealed the challenges Nadal faced due to this critical operation. The king of Clay Court went through an arthroscopic surgery to treat the psoas muscle and he had to take a long five months of rest after the operation.

Nadal’s surgery was complicated because his representative confirmed how three doctors from overseas arrived especially to perform the surgery. However, now that the days of tension are gone, Carlos Moya revealed to the fans what happened to the world’s former number-one tennis star, Rafael Nadal.

Carlos Moya opened up about Rafael Nadal’s complicated operations and why operating in the first place was essential. He said- “The entire process that requires an operation with absolute rest. He had a more complicated operation than initially anticipated. Once they opened and saw what was there, it was more delicate than initially thought.”

He went on saying: “Look, he had tests and MRIs… it seems that what he had was not well seen and the recovery time has been longer than expected. It is also true that if you do not have surgery, it would be even more difficult for you to recover.” Moya expressed to Nadal’s fans that the surgery was significant for him considering it is the only way to get back to the tennis court in form.

Moya’s statement further added Nadal’s aspirations about bidding farewell to the professional tennis career on the court, which also made the surgery quite essential for him. Carlos Moya said- “He was always clear that he wanted to return, and he wanted his farewell to be on the track. After the operation, it was a month and a half of practically not seeing him, since he went on vacation. He was doing the rehabilitation within certain conditions, since he was on the boat, in Greece.”

However, this king of Clay Court didn’t stop from starting his practice sessions as Moya added-“Then, at the end of August, we started training. Nothing, very soft. We did it two days a week, twenty minutes. A very slow progression, we went back a little, we came back… Always very conservative.”

Will Rafael Nadal accept his retirement from professional tennis in 2024?

This twelfth-time French Open winner previously spoke about his wishes to join the French Olympics after his break due to surgery. However, he also expressed that he might not be able to attend the event since his injury is yet to be completely recovered.

In fact, Nadal’s official statements didn’t reveal directly but hinted at his retirement in 2024. After a decade of extraordinary tennis skills, it will surely be a teary-eyed day for both Nadal and his fans to bid goodbye to him forever from the sphere of professional tennis. However, there is still time to do that.
