César Alierta Izuel, one of Spain’s greatest businessmen and the former CEO of Telefonica, has passed away in Zaragoza at the age of 78. Rafael Nadal, who is the global ambassador of the multinational telecommunications company, is deeply saddened by this devastating news, as he recently took to social media to express his deepest condolences.

For 16 years, Izuel served as CEO of Telefonica before passing the baton to Jose Maria Alvarez-Pallete. During this tenure, the Spanish businessman’s brand joined hands with many popular figures as its brand ambassadors, including the 22-time singles Grand Slam champion, and the company also shared a personal connection with Nadal’s academy.

In their latest tweet, Telefonica stated, “With hearts full of sadness, we express our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the beloved former president of Telefónica, César Alierta. We will always remember with enormous gratitude and affection his immense work at Telefónica #InmemoriamCesarAlierta”

While retweeting the social media post, Rafael Nadal penned a heartfelt message as he expressed his deepest condolences to César Alierta Izuel’s family and friends. He said, “A hug to César’s family and all of @Telefonica’s family. Saddened by the news of his death. D.E.P”

The 22-time singles Grand Slam champion is deeply saddened by the passing of the former CEO of Telefonica, who shared a personal connection with his academy in Majorca.

Nadal’s academy and Telefonica previously came up with an initiative

Back in 2014, the Spanish telecommunications and broadband company signed the ‘King of the Clay’ as a brand ambassador. Rafael Nadal serves as a global ambassador for both institutional and commercial brands, representing Movistar, O2, and Vivo in various regions of Europe and Latin America.

As a part of their collaboration, Rafael Nadal and Telefonica previously rolled out an initiative called “Rafa Nadal Academy by Movistar.” The tennis academy was established in Majorca to carry out charitable disability and tennis projects and provide Telefónica grants to young people from impoverished backgrounds.
